So what characteristic of vacuums = soft carpet?

Sorry for yet another vacuum thread, I've been so annoyed with throwing away money on mediocrity (from cheapie dirt devils to a dyson) that I'm researching the hell out of this purchase (2 cats and toddler, enough said).

I picked up a dirt devil class hand vac (link below)for the occasional crumbs and noticed how incredibly soft it made my carpet. Cleaner and softer than any full sized vacuum I've used, which was very surprising. The hand vac uses an old fashioned brush bar vs the new plasticy ones (rubber?) that I see used often, in a pretty aggressive configuration - I'm guessing this beating of the carpet it what's adding to the softness.

Short of looking at every vacuum's brushbar before purchasing (hard, especially since I'm ordering online), what spec should I look for? Are the fiberous brushes (vs plasticy) called something in particular? What other specs should I look for if I want that nice, soft, plus feeling?
