:( So what are we all playing? I'm going through a big 'meh' period here, just playing CM4 & MarioKart64 multiplayer..

Or better yet, get a DS and MKDS! I think that's much better than any other Mario Kart!

Can't believe how much fun I am having w/ my DS lite. One guy at work got one, now most everyone (women included) has one. Currently enjoying epic MKDS and Tetris games @ work. Thankfully nobody snakes in Mario Kart. Definately logged some hours on Sudoku and NSMB.

Hard to believe my main gaming rig is 67mhz lol. Probably do more PC gaming when UT2k7 and Quake Wars arrive.

Right now I'm revisiting Oblivion with Oscuro's mod. Hate to say it but I like the game a lot more with this mod than the version Bethesda put out. The bow is actually useful now.

For some good old school gaming check out Blade of Darness: Severance. I wish they would come out with a sequel, I've played through this game probably 50 times.

For some good dorky humor, check out the lego star wars series

For a good and interesting RTS check our rise of nations: rise of legends

Titan Quest/Dungeon Siege II are decent plays. Nothing spectaculr, but fun if you like Diablo style action (and Titan Quest is beautiful)

The Direct2Drive version of Vampires the Masquerade: Bloodlines is actually quite good and is only $19.99. It's virtually bug free, unlike the original release version.

If you want some really good old school rpg action, see if you can pick up a copy of Bane of the Cosmic forge (be forewarned, its a late 80's title). Probably my second favorite game of all time (next to Battlehawks: 1942). You can probably find it as freeware/abandonware. Great story and fun turn based battles. Wizardry VIII is in the same series as Bane and is much more up to date. Yes, I know these games were developed by D.W. Bradley, who deservedly lost the respect of every game publisher when he released and sold Dungeon Lords, even though the game was not even 50% finished, and then sold a 75% complete version as a "collectors edition." Nonetheless, the wizardry series is an excellent group of highly entertaining RPG's.

Speaking from within these limits you could argue the designers are trying to balance quality with performance.
Valve could have did 2048 texture maps for all their characters on release and the overall model presentation would have been better then any game today. Obviously they wouldn't do such a thing because the source engine can only switch out textures based off the version of dx your using...not what hardware settings you have. Would probably piss people off to have their game stutter everytime a few new character models are rendered.

Simply d/l the upgraded texture packs for Oblivion and they just blow away the Ep1 models.

So your saying from a stock standpoint...that Ep1 character models are better?
If an artist created a model and compiled it for both oblivion and Hl2 how different do you think they would look?

Source simply LACKS ligting and shadows. . . turn on that crappy flashlight in Ep1 . . . the reason it is so dull is so that you don't notice it casts NO shadows that INTERACT with anything ELSE.

to CONTRAST, light up a torch in an Oblivion cave. . . . it's shadows dance around interacting with the shadows and lighting from OTHER sources . . . very realistic in contrast to Source fixed lighting.

Phys and dynamic models in source do infact have dynamic shadows but brush and static do not and
yes it does suck from a high end standpoint.

Dug, I hope I can shed some light on which GPU to get.

See my m170 specs below. The 6800 Go Ultra is nothing more than a PCIe 6800GS. I know the difference between AGP & PCIe 6800GS, so if get an AGP GS to run as fast or faster than the PCIe (which is safe to assume) here's the lowdown.

My desktop used to run a 6600GT (PCIe) with a 3.0ghz P4c & 1.5ghz DDR2 memory. Comparisons are not exactly the same, but both CPUs are very close runnig games about the same according to various websites I've read.

Last month I upgraded to an XFX 7600GT (590/1600). In the games that I run regularly (COD2, HL2 & Epi 1, Quake 4, FEAR demo, Chronicles of Riddick), both desktop & m170 run the same resolutions, all settings on full, 2xAA & 8-16AF, and all games run about the same speed. No benchmarks for you, but just playing the games they're pretty much the same. Actually, I believe the 6800 Go Ultra/6800GS can handle a little more AA than the 7600GT can.

Whichever way you go, you will notice a substantial speed difference.
