So what are the quirks you experience in Windows 8?

I was one of the most people who hated Windows 8, but this changed recently as I got my shiny new ASUS G750JX. If I want to install Windows 7, I will have to disable secure boot, fast boot, options in the BIOS, and enable "Launch CSM" which offcourse ir way slower when booting. Performance wise in Windows I don't know but it seems that Windows 8 is snappier.

So I was forced to try to adapt to Windows 8

What I did was install StartIsBack (the best start menu alternative I've tried from the lot, classic shell is crap and Start8 from Stardock sometimes makes my explorer.exe freeze when I right click on a file)

Next, I configured all my library folders to my liking

I disabled hibernation and pagefile

I uninstalled all metro apps by going to the Win 8 Start screen, right clicking on each one, then clicking on uninstall at the bottom

then I ran this registry file to completely get rid of the Metro Apps

I disabled the Home Group 2 services as I don't need any home group managing my file sharing

I disabled the program compatibility assistant, I know what I'm doing I don't need Windows to pop up after every app install asking me whether it installed correctly or not

I disabled error reporting

I disabled the notification after running any file from Windows that asks you "You have new apps that can open this extension". I did this via the Group Policy Editor or you can run this reg file if you have Windows 8 Single Language then reboot

I set my icon spacing to -1600 to have long names properly display (did this via the registry)

I installed all the Windows 7 Games like Solitaire, Hearts, etc. (PM me for more details on how to do this)

I didn't sign in to a Microsoft Account, local account FTW

Disabled UAC

I am trying to find a reason to force me to go back to Windows 7 but I can't

What are the quirks that you are having that makes you not want to install Windows 8?

None, using Win8 more or less how it is ,only added Decor8 and OblyTile to make it look nicer and few extra stuff on Win+X menu like Shut Down,Reboot,Paint etc...

Having come up from Dos 6.22 days and seen changes from Win3.1 to present (including Linux distros)nothing phases me,I adapt very quickly and to be honest operating systems nowadays is kids play, roll on Win9,10 etc something new to play with :) .

I can NEVER understand people that get hang up on an OS,things change over time, either adapt and get with it or become a relic and live in the past so to speak.

Btw only quirk I had is crappy Nvidia drivers, had to got back to good old 314.22s best driver for my 560Ti card until Nvidia sort the freezing issue out on Win7,8(see geforce.com forums for the big thread on this),however it's not Win8 fault ;) .

A lot of people don't want to admit, but Windows 8 is a superior OS to Windows 7; especially for gaming. It's faster, more efficient, and more secure. The only thing about Windows 8 that I didn't like initially was the hybridized Metro UI, but now that I've gotten used to it (and learned all of the hotkey combos), I don't even see that as a con anymore.

Once you get the hang of it, you can actually access apps and programs just as fast, or even faster than you can on Windows 7.

So it's official, Windows 8 > Windows 7 :p

I don't find Metro horrible so to speak, the only reason why I install StartIsBack is because I like in the start menu how you have your docs, pics, music, vids, all there I find that easier to access than the Metro Start Menu

interesting post from a user on another forum and my reply to him:

I am sure others need more like the original search and the like..................

Oh I stopped using Windows Search since Windows 7, it never finds what I am looking for. So I turn off Indexing and I only use Everything, I place a shortcut in my taskbar for it, it finds anything you start typing withing a sec! blistering fast and puts the Windows Search down to shame

Try it

The only thing I don't like is when I play games it will go to desktop out of no where. Then I have to scramble to get back to gaming.

Old Start button menu was limit ie could only pin so many games to the list etc..however with Metro I can have columns for different types of software so very easy to find,I want a game so bang I hit Metro and "My Games" column which has them listed A to Z,plus side is you can have more games listed or other types of software (column wise),another advantage is for touchscreen or small screen users being you get the whole Metro screen rather then a small Start button menu like in Win7.

Btw, berryracer, what did you not like about Classic Shell's menu if I may ask? :)

Because it did bring back the start menu but I didn't feel it was the same Win 7 Menu I know, it was more like a replica. Can't remember exactly but it wasn't like the real thing

If you try the StartIsBack demo which is free for 30 days with no nags, you will appreciate it. It's only 2 USD for a 3 PC license so it won't break the bank and doesn't have the issues that Start8 suffers from

When I first installed Windows 8, Start8 was the first app I bought but everytime I would right click on a file my explorer.exe would freeze or the right click would be so slow. that's when I learned about StartIsBack FTW

The biggest stupid quirk that I've experienced is when you bring up the keyboard it pushes your fullscreened window's border up, and it stays in that position even after you dismiss the keyboard. Yes, a fullscreened, maximized window will actually not be maximized. God you just knew microsoft would screw that up. You have to actually unmaximize the window, and then maximize it again for it to be fixed. After you do this, the problem seems to go away for a while.

The other extremely annoying thing is sometimes the touch/drag works just fine, like it does on a phone. But then other times touch/drag will select text. :hmm: I'll be shaking my head trying to get it to stop selecting blocks of text.

I use the file explorer shortcut to access docs, pics, music etcetera, since I'm almost always running in desktop mode.

Interesting. I might have to check it out. Although Everything is faster, isn't Windows Search more thorough though?

Actually the reason I asked is bcoz I am on the Classic Shell team and I admit it doesn't look authentic like the Windows 7 menu. We are correcting that issue with version 4.0 which is in beta at the moment. Here's a screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/z7L6Jb9.png

I forgot about my negative experience with Classic shell but it was the worst of the lot. Please do not take offense and consider this as constructive f33db4ck.

First thing I see in the image you posted is the block edges, they are rounded edges just like in Win 7 in Start 8 and StartIsBack

Secondly, StartIsBack's options are exactly like the ones in Windows 7, every single option, what shortcuts you want, how you want to open them as in, a menu or a single click, it is a replica of Windows 7, Classic Shell wasn't as easy to set up for me

I really hope it will be improved so I can start using it on friends' computers.

Thanks

ok new quirk for meh,

I have StartIsBack installed but when I am typing on the keyboard sometimes the metro screen suddenly pops up and I find myself continuing to type in the search box! how do I stop this crap?

I think this is triggered if I slightly touch the touchpad but I'm not sure.

Please help me I am going nuts!

No offense taken, feedback is appreciated.;) Square or rounded corners depends on the skin. You can change the skin. Here's a screenshot of a skin with rounded corners and the settings UI is also made way easier in the next version to make it easy to change settings: http://i.imgur.com/g71Vf06.png (I hope it's okay to post link to screenshots of free software without being considered a spammer).

Another thing that gets me on windows 8 is when you tap on a text box, such as a google search box, and then open the keyboard, the keyboard will actually cover up the box so you cant see what you're typing. So you flick your finger to scroll the page so you can see the box and then you start typing. But the box has lost its focus so you have to tap on the box again to get it back in focus. It is just so stupidly clunky.

One thing I've noticed about Windows 8, is that system restore will turn itself on at times (usually after video driver installation) even though I have it disabled.

actually, by default it's off until you connect to the internet and activate windows, its on. If you turn it off then it never ever comes back automatically

Classic Shell works good. Win8 boots in about 15-20 seconds, shuts down in about 10-15 sec, - screen goes black in about 2 sec, fully shuts down in about 10-15...

Don't have Metro UI since day 1. Classic Windows desktop when computer boots up...
All apps I needed works well except O&O defrag Pro 11 that I couldn't install. on Win8.

No problems at all...I skipped Win7 on my home PC - from Vista to Win8.
Justy got new Win7 at work - upgrade from Win XP....
