So what are some ways to diagnose a Windows startup delay?

I'm noticing a delay during Windows startup (after you login) which causing the delay of some automatic startup program to load for well over 60 seconds. This means that for one, my wireless network software is delayed during this time.

Now, I used msconfig to uncheck anything from starting up that seems suspicious or that I really don;t need (like winamp agent)

I also monitored what's going on in terms of processes using CPU cycles with Process Explorer, and I found that during this delay nothing much was going on really- around 95 % System Idle, the rest on process explorer itself or taskmgr.exe

What else can I try ?

Got SP2 on there? A co-worker was having to wait roughly 10 minutes to "apply user settings" after a power outage one day. Two days later he slapped SP2 on there and the problem went away.

Yeah actually I do have SP2 on here, hell I was starting to think that was part of the problem 😉

Check Event Viewer. Might be something useful in there.

Hmm yeah it's pretty ugly... I think I'll run a defrag tonight. I'm sure the defragmentation contributes to this delay but I really doubt it is the main reason- I mean the system is otherwise very responsive and snappy.

Hmm, good idea. Next time I reboot I'll monitor those logs and see if there are any clues

Check for Ad-wares, they slowed my new computer very drastically until I deleted them.

Oops, forgot to mention that!

Yeah the first thing I did was use Adaware, HijackThis, SpySweeper and AntiVir anti-virus... all they picked up were cookies.

If you have an active NIC that isn't actually connected to a network, that can take a long time to come up. You can disable it in Dev Mgr - then reenable when you find a use for it.

just d/l and run bootvis, it will tell you where the lag is.

I had the exact problem and it was caused by SP2...when I uninstalled that everything was good again
