Last year at this time there was already plenty of information about the 9800xt an the 5950. This year I have heard nothing and it seems possible that at least ATi can't do a whole lot more with their current architecture. Are either companies gonna release .11 micron gpus or something?

ATi will be releasing .11u GPUs, and have already laid those plans out.

Cost down kickers... wouldn't expect any big leaps soon as their new products will barely be penetrating the markets in numbers by fall.

We'll just see maybe a speed bump of their high end cards and definitely their low- and mid-end cards. We shouldn't see new or really improved architectures until next Spring (SM3.0 for ATi, and I'm guessing still SM3.0 for nV).

the nv45 wil be nvidias fall refresh and I am thinking ati will just do some speed bumps and both will be doing pci-e on fall refreshes. This fall will be all about the prices coming down on tehis new generation as well as S939. Which is why I am waiting till the holiday season to build a new rig fro myself. I am hoping to keep up with my 1 yr building cycle.

So it looks like both companies really will be going on an 18 month cy le for their new chips. I think ill hold off upgrading until r500 or nv50.

Am I the only one that thinks that it's crazy to be spending $400 to $500+ on a video card that's obselete inside of a year?

Well, that's a pretty loaded question.

First, I agree that takes guts (and money) to spend $400-$500 on a video card.

However, anyone who does that now, will not have a card that is obsolete anytime soon, let alone one year. I think someone who bought an X800pro or 6800GT would be able to use that card for two years easily.

I just bought a 9700 pro in January, and that card is quite fast. Someone who purchased that right when it came out would have been able to use it for quite some time.

I'll personall wait until december and see what's available at that time (I'm guessing it won't be much of anything new or faster, just the same stuff but less expensive and more available).

Hehe... I Remember when Voodoo 2 SLI came out, I knew people that spent $600 to get SLI. I also remember spending $2340 to get my PII 300 from some ad in the newspaper before I knew how to build my own computer. Seems like CPU prices have dropped by video cards are still expensive!
