And the guy infront of us orders some waters.

The lady at the register says that the waters will be 25 cents each, and the guy has a coronary.

He starts in about how it is against the law for restaurants to charge for water in Oregon. The lady says.. OK... and that there is nothing she can do, so he asks for the manager. The manager comes and disagrees.. he says, "wanna bet?" and threatens to sue. She says that there is nothing she can do, she is just doing her job. He starts in about again how he can take them to court and he wants the store number and the managers name, store owners name, etc.. Of course, they complied with all this information. It was quite amusing, considering it was over a whole 75 cents. The guy wouldn't quit.. even as he walked out, he was bitching.

I can't find anything about such a law. Does it really exist? Something tells me.. no. :p

You would not believe the number of people that go absolute ape sh!t over just a few cents. I've had people totally flip out over a manner of 12 cents before.

12 fvcking cents. I hate retail.

slightly off topic: the water you get at these places, it's not straight from the tap is it?

Cups ain't free. He could have free water from the restroom sink, with no cup.

On the soda machine, usually on the Sprite or Sierra Mist there's a little tab you press that says water on it. So no, not from the tap.

Heh. Yeah, they just say that you're paying for the cup.

His main arguement, besides the against the law tidbit, was that he could sit in the restaurant for 5 hours and have all the free refills on soda he wants, yet he's charged for water.. lol

The thing that I found the most odd was.. he was with his wife and kid. Normally, you would think the wife and kid would be embaressed.. but nope, they actually got into it. When the ordeal was simmering down and they were getting ready to leave, the guys wife went to the manager and bitched her out some more, about how it was only 75 cents and she should've just given them the water.

I guess they're the perfect couple.. lol

Bah, I had a customer cuss me out because of $0.01. He ordered a biscuit and two senior coffees. I said, $1.23. He said it was $1.22. I said, no, it's $1.23. We were slow, so I worked it out on paper (just incase the register was wrong).

It came out $1.225. He said, "See, $1.22". I said "Unless you have a half cent, you're going to need to give me $1.23 and write the rest off as a loss."

He started cussing about McDonald's and the governement trying to take his money. I wanted to say that since he was on Social Security, the government gave him the money in the first place, but I didn't.

He and some other old people actually sued our store because we raised the price of a senior coffee from $0.27 to $0.42. Sued.

They lost of course. The judge laughed them out of court.

The moral of the story: People are somewhat smart normally, but they turn into 3 year olds when they enter customer mode.

I prefer to drink water over soda, assuming it's not tap water. Many places (fast food) will only give a small cup for water. But I like to drink a lot of water, so, it sucks. I presume they do this because of the cheapskates who ask for water and use the cups for soda.

So, I've gotten into the habit of asking for a big cup, and offer to pay for that. 99% of the time I get the cup for free. I think the mall usually charges, and I don't eat at the mall much, so it's not a biggie.

Anyway, he should have paid the $.75 and then wrote to corporate later, if he was so concerned about the charge.

off-topic, but Social Security doesn't come from the government. it's a retirement/disability insurance program that is paid for by the people who get the benefits. It isn't a governemnt hand-out.

The water that comes out of the fountain machine is tap water. It is just ran through a filter first I believe. I could be wrong.

Law or no law, it's bad CS to charge for water. It will backfire every time you try it. You just make up the cost of the cups (less than 5 cents) in other ways.

i'm pretty sure it's illegal to charge for water... however think what else you are getting.... THE CUP... they can charge for that... and ICE... that's water too but it takes electricity to freeze it... so they can charge for that stuff instead... so basically they can charge for water

I've never had a place charge for water, if I was buying other stuff too.

Did these people buy anything besides the water ?
