Lol, coincidentally I'm considering signing up for a class about that without knowing anything about them, also.
According to my school's course description they're used for "signal processing and data compression."

To express functions as a sum of sines and cosines. It's useful because you can easily get the frequency response of the signal.

We used them to generate random vibrations for a test cell. Early 90's. The computer used had 8 68030 processors.

Prime 95 uses them to verifiy very large mersene primes.

We use them to extract the speed of sound in a material from the raw ISS signal.

they are the best thing ever, and not just for elec applications.

Well not Fourier series specifically, but that family of transform is truly wonderful.

I certanly hope so, some of the problems take up lots of paper. ha!
