Why is automatic downloading the only way to download Service Pack 2? I don't even know how to install something that is downloaded automattically. I enabled automatic updates, but when will I know it is downloaded? When will it download? Is there a way I can make it start? Where will it be saved to?

search for the network install download on microsoft's website. it is larger (260~ MBs), but you can download it and save it to a disk and use it for offline installations.

What's the difference between the two? Why is it larger? The website says don't download it for one computer (but bandwidth isn't an issue for me).

Its larger because it contains all the code from SP1 and SP2, for all versions of windows, be it Home, Pro, Tablet, whatever.

When you use auto update, it sees what you already have updated, and only downloads what still needs updated.

Also, Windows Update will have it soon. I think I read Home has it already, and Pro will have it on the 25th, or something like that.

Windows update already has it, but they don't give it to everyone at the same time, they are rolling it out gradually. There's no reason not to get the network install if bandwidth isn't an issue, because you never know when you will get it if you wait for windows update.
