Why is it so slow to copy files to thumb drive and much faster to an external USB SSD drive? They are both memory that is retained after the power is off.

I accidentally sent a flash drive through the washer and dryer once. Still worked, amazingly.

why would you ever call a memory predator.....
it's not a gaming hardware product or PC of FPS players, it's a friggin USB stick!

I guess that putting it in a small package means you have to give up on a decent controller or features that make it faster.

Just get a USB 3.0 portable 2.5" drive for ~$80. The thing is so damn small already.

Shit, I need USB 3.0 ports. FML.

a) cheap controller
b) cheap flash chips

you have to get above the commodity generic usb flash drive to get speeds that are any good.

what i'd like and have not found is a slim (same size as the usb port) usb stick with metal housing (including the loop for my keychain) and high speed. you can usually only get 2 of the 3.

I have this one:

Reviews say 30 read, 15 write. It's in the middle of the pack for me - not the fastest drive, but definitely not the slowest - zippy enough that it lives on my keychain. Sturdy metal housing too.

Most thumb drives are USB 2, and SSDs are USB 3.0.

Wow that's incredible.

It seems it was not that long ago 1GB was pretty incredible for a USB stick. Heck, not that far before that we were using 1.44MB floppies!

I still can't get over micro SD cards, how small they are and how much info they can store.

I'm shocked at the price tag. If this was say 1tb for 600-700$ (and normal USB stick size) I could see my rich-as-fuck clients buying this, but at $1000 you're much better off by getting a 2.5" 1TB external SSD for 500$ and making do with a 20% larger drive. It's not much different between this and a 2.5" anyways.

I also don't know of anyone who would keychain a $1000 drive.

I still can't get over micro SD cards, how small they are and how much info they can store.

Amen to that. Every time I deal with a SD card I stare in awe for some time, amazed at how small the sd micro form factor is yet how much data it can hold. I have micro SD cards that can hold 64gb and they are half the size of my thumbnail.

That looks similar to the one I carry with me:

I upgraded last year from the same model 32GB size. Whenever they get around to doubling the capacity again in that form factor I'll upgrade again. The micro SD card I keep in my phone makes that not as important anymore though.

added to amazon list. looks nice, at least.

I tried a few others & they all fell apart - other metal ring ones like that, ones with plastic hooks, ones with caps that would disappear. This one has held up the longest!

I don't really see the point in this.

If you're storing that much data, I'd imagine you want something a bit more fool-proof (not easily dropped or sent through the washer). On the other hand, by the time 1TB thumb drives have dropped to a reasonable price (under $100 or so), cloud storage will be so common and easy that removable media will mostly be a thing of the past.

Yeah, I'm trying to think of an actual use for this. 11.6" touchscreen laptops running Windows 8 are only $279 at Best Buy and you can throw a 1TB HDD in there for $99, which seems like a moderately better deal haha. Even a 1TB SSD is under $500, if you need speed.

I suppose it would be handy for cloning a full system on-the-fly, like maybe for a business or something...I dunno. Most of my USB sticks have broken, gotten lost, or died in the washing machine, so I'd be nervous to carry a $1,000 stick around on my keychain haha.
