So wait, Steve Jobs was a thief or just a cheapskate?

Steve Jobs never had license plates on his car... supposedly for privacy reasons.

For years, rumors swirled that Jobs had either won a special dispensation from California authorities or was just daring police to stop him. While the why remains somewhat cloudy, an interview by ITWire with a former Apple security executive reveals the real reason: a little-known loophole in California vehicle laws that gives owners up to six months to get plates for their vehicles.

According to Jon Callas, now chief technical officer of Entrust, Jobs would arrange with his vehicle leasing company to switch out his silver Mercedes every six months with a new, identical model — just another of the complicated and expensive ways Jobs thought differently.

Sounds to me like Saint Jobs wasn't much more than a shady schemer.

The author of his biography was on 60 minutes and spoke on this. He said he asked Jobs why he didn't have license plates, Jobs said "for privacy reasons" then the author said "well that doesn't make sense because you are more noticeable WITHOUT a license plate right?" Steve responded with something like, "Yea I guess your right. I just don't feel like having a license plate."

By not paying into that failing California money pit of a government like he should have?

You mean registering his car for a couple of hundred dollars? I think the taxes generated from leasing a new car every six months generates more money to the state.

This.

Cheapskate? How is leasing a new vehicle every six months cheap?
Thief? How?

Registration for me, in the bay area, with my dinky 2008 Mazda 3 is nearly $200.

Now, I assume he is spending way more cash by working a new lease every 6 months with Mercedes....but you know, he probably wasn't. Dealer is probably happy enough to be working with Jobs, 6-month used car is still quite leaseable and has that "You want to lease Steve Jobs' car?" factor.

This what?

He's not registering the car to be a cheapskate. And he's generating much more to the state in leasing a new vehicle every six months.

You think a billionaire like Jobs is going to nickle and dime a dealership over a lease? No. Jobs is probably paying sticker price and the dealership is just kissing his ass and doing whatever they can to make things convenient for him. They're not giving him a discount or anything.

The man was well known for his bizarre proclivities. He refused cancer treatment very early on that could have saved his life. Instead he tried herbal treatments and meditation.

The article said he didn't have plates, it didn't say that the car wasn't registered. I've never heard of being able to drive an unregistered car, my car still doesn't have plates and it's been registered for more than a month.

I agree with his ex girlfriend. He had Narcissistic Personality Disorder: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0001930/

A person with narcissistic personality disorder may:

React to criticism with rage, shame, or humiliation

Take advantage of other people to achieve his or her own goals

Have excessive feelings of self-importance

Exaggerate achievements and talents

Be preoccupied with fantasies of success, power, beauty, intelligence, or ideal love

Have unreasonable expectations of favorable treatment

Need constant attention and admiration

Disregard the feelings of others, and have little ability to feel empathy

Have obsessive self-interest

Pursue mainly selfish goals

What an intellectual debate we have going here. So the guy was delusional with cancer treatment and now we see he was paranoid. The man had issues...
