Well, I'm probably not the only one here, but that soup sounds really good. I for one love broccoli(sp), assuming it's cooked right. Anyways, you made me hungry, and I hate you for that.

Sounds like you just made the mistake of bringing soup, no harm in that. I personally love broccoli cheese soup and at that type of a function I probably would have started with a bowl of it (before grabbing a plate). Then I would have picked at the other stuff, and probably hit up the pot for another bowl after eating whatever other stuff they had there. I'm not big on sweets at potluck functions. Sugar is sugar to me... good soup... mmmm mmm good 🙂

Seriously though don't get offended, it's just that soup is hard(er) to handle. I'm sure if it was a family potluck where noone cared about gas and spilling a bit, it would have been gone very fast.

"I was offended" is the new slang for "I can't take the reality of the world"... or in certain variations... "wah wah wah".

If it's as good as you say... it's their loss. Should have just asked people to try some and tell you what they think instead of hoping they bite.

For the record, I'm not a fan of brocolli, but I always give a try to something that people make the effort to cook for me. The recipe sounds like it would be awesome if you sub the brocolli with potatoes. Use a crock pot on "keep warm" setting after where you bring to a boil then lower the heat and you probably won't have to worry about it sticking.

offended? p-shaw. Your fault for putting expectations that high. Since when are you ever obligated to try stuff at a pot luck. If you like it and/or it looks good and/or you have room on your plate and/or you have an extra hand for an extra bowl, then you maybe try the soup. Otherwise, why bother?

Well, you used margarine, and I'm sure that people are avoiding your soup due to the high trans-fat content.

Next time, use butter and not only will it taste better, but it'll be healthier. Of course, it'll cost $1 more.

In reality, be happy nobody ate it. They're idiots. You see people eat less-good stuff all the time. Wonder Bread, Log Cabin Syrup, etc... We had a great deli near where I worked... Nobody went there, but when subway came along, it got immediate huge lines. And subway blows!

who cares... more for you then? 😀

qft like crazy

if it were me, i'd make something that i liked that i didn't think simpletons would even try (typical persian food) JUST so i could take 90% of it home with me.

1, i don't look like the jerk who didn't make anything for the party
2, some people might try it (in which case they'd probably like it cuz it's awesome, but it doesn't look like a saxo-european style dish, so not many people would be comfortable trying it)
3, more for me 🙂

so every year our unit of about 15 people have a christmas party on the wednesday b4 christmas. Everyone cooks and brings in an item of your choise.
So last night, I spent about 3-4 hours making this excellent pot of broccoli/cheese soup, and baked fresh french bread baguettes.
I made everything completely from scratch with all fresh ingredients. Several people sampled it after it was done and said how excellent it was.

however at the party today, only 2 people out of 15 (besides me) even attempted to try it. I know this, because its easy to see how many people took styrofoam bowls. 1 of those 2 also told me how excellent the soup was... but I took 90% of what i made back home with me. Nearly all of everythign else that was brought in was completely gone.

fvck that party next year... bunch of ungrateful losers.

My responses...
1)It was a sitdown buffet style dinner. Granted the soup did require an auxillary bowl to eat, but it wasnt out of the ordinary with anythign else served... turkey stuffed with roasted red peppers, mini hot dogs in bourbon sauce new orleans style, pasta salad, etc. the only finger food was pumpernickel bread with spinach dip. What i found most insulting was that nearly every other item was 90-100% consumed adn the soup and bread was almost completely untouched.

2)I admit some people dont like broccoli. Everything there had cheese in some form in it. But i find it difficult to believe that 13 out of 15 people dont like broccoli.

3)The reason why partially im offended maybe due to the fact that that office has done this b4 to another employee. After seeing how this one lady had a lot of cats, no one would eat her dishes for fear of cat hair being a primary ingredient in her dish. understandably. (she has now been delegated to bring pop and cups - sealed items to the party) But i have no such cleanlyness problems, (I wash after I pee, etc) btu start to wonder if there is another rumor spreading about me im unaware of.

4)here is the recipe...

Wash and cut 2 fresh broccoli trees. Keep the trunk whole, but chop the ends up as chunky or large as you want.

In a large pot place 1/2 stick of margarin and melt it. Add 1/2 cup of flour and stir in completely. fry the butter/flour mixture for 4 minutes stirring continually to avoid sticking to the bottom.

Add 1 quart of half and half (milk/creme)and stir until the flour/butter mixture is dissolved.

Add 4 cups of chicken broth made from chicken soup base powder or boullion.
This is called making a rue. Season moderatley with pepper, onion powder, salt, and garlic.

Place the 2 whole broccoli trunks in the rue, bring to a boil and then lower heat. Slow simmer for 25 minutes constantly stirring.

Add all the chopped broccoli and 2 cups of large cut shredded carrots. Cook over medium heat for 20 minutes, still stirring. (the hardest thing about creme soups is to prevent the bottom from burning, requiring constant stirring.)

Remove the broccoli trunks (they were mostly for flavor)

Finally add 1 16 ounce pkg of shredded mild cheddar, and 1 16ounce pkg of shredded colbyjack. Add 1.5 tblspoon of ground nutmeg (more or less to taste.) and cook for 10 more minutes until creamy.

Serve with frenchbread slices. This recipe usually serves 4-6 people

Any leftovers will thicken over night in the refridgerator, so add milk when you re-heat.

If people don't know good food when they see it - screw 'em. There's more for you.

I have to agree with the "many people just hate broccoli" theory, as I am one of them.

It's a disgusting, smelly food when cooked, but not too bad when fresh and in small quantities (like on a salad).
