I see in this thread people are bringing legalizing drugs into it too. This is where the whole debate falls apart because the issue gets broken up into ludicrous statements.

Legalizing guns and legalizing drugs are two separate issues. Also when one is talking legalizing drugs, that opens a whole bag of worms as heroin is a totally different animal than X or pot.

I disagree. The failed ban on drugs and never ending drug supply is an EXCELLENT example to use to show how a ban on guns will do NOTHING to keep guns out of the hands of criminals. ALL it will do is disarm the law abiding.

It is also a good example to show how passing more laws to keep people from breaking already existing laws is absurd.

That was not the scope of my argument.

My point is you get this guys during a talk on guns coming out of left feild with 'Yeah and pot should be legal too'.

I am fairly liberal, but I picture some idiot getting smoked out while carrying concealed and running to the local kwikee-mart...as he enters paranoia sets in. Obviously for the more intelligent like drinking they are not going to do it then drive or something...however those that don't understand....well don't understand.

This is why I always find it best to discuss the one issue. Get that nailed down. Then at a later time bring up the next. Most figure they have a listening ear and then just get verbal diarrhea and unload everything.

Prior to even that, I find most 'advocates' on many issues, don't know anything about the issue at hand, but see the bandwagon forming.

I don't think so, but the opinions on some users were.

Basic cliffs (edit somehow submitted too soon) were:

Why do you need a gun, we have police and our governments will never turn on it's people...that's just ancient history. Also if we are going to legalize guns why not drugs at the same time. Oh and apaches/raptors > *, because we all know no one guy can take them out with basic weaponry...it's in my Game Guide right here...

Well this was the Cliffs for those that just don't know what the hell is going on around them.

Meh. Blasphemy! Only .338 LM worth having is the original one and only bolt rifle made by Accuracy International via the AWSM.

But seriously something like that is only a toy anyway. When it comes to a SHTF battle rifle I'll only consider .308/7.62x51mm or 7.62x39mm soviet. You can find the ammo anywhere and its pocket change to stock up on, and still more than enough for urban combat.

Good luck finding boxes of .338 LM laying about when you run out ;)

I think people should have the right to bear arms, but I don't understand why most of you are so passionate when it comes to restricting guns that can maim and kill a lot of people in a short period of time.

The answer to your question is SIMPLE; I don't want myself, my friends or family maimed or killed by anyone.

How many people do you know that hunt rabbits with an AK or UZI? I don't know any and I'm around guns and the shooting sports almost everyday.

LOL....

er... go get em... GRIN

Personally, I don't think we should have such tight gun control in this country. I believe that the criminals will always be armed no matter how many gun laws you put on law abiding citizens. Gun accidents will always happen unfortunately, however, there should be better training for people who purchase guns... better gun safety classes etc.

Just recently they had a grandmother who bought a gun and took some serious gun classes and gun safety classes. Some guy broke into her house and her grandchild and her found him in one of their closets. She shot him in the leg while her grandchild (who was a teenager) called the police. He crawled onto her porched. He tried to grab the gun from her, but because she had been trained she stepped back and fired. She could have hit him dead center in the head or heart per her comments, but decided instead to wound him. The police did finally catch him. He was armed with a knife when they caught him. So my point is, if it hadn't been for her training, and her ability to purchase that weapon she and her granddaughter might be dead now.
