So this Opteron 148 I've got....

Finally made it to 3.0GHz! I could never quite do it back when I was really trying. I got out of computers and whatnot for 3 years while I was away at college so I've still got the same old computer parts as I last had. Now I'm back home wishing I had the money for a nice i920 and an nVidia 470...oh well.

DFI SLI-DR Expert
Opteron 148 2.2GHz @ 3.0GHz - Aircooled Thermalright XP-120 w/120mm fan
Corsair 1GB PC3200 2-2-2-5
eVGA 7800GT 470/1100
250GB Seagate SATA HD

Good news is that I can still play on the few remaining Battlefield 1942 (yes the original) servers. But even FEAR 1 is bad :(

And literally just as I submitted that, my PSU (470W Vantec Stealth) started surging. Guess it didn't like the power I was drawing from it. Mind you this power supply powered my old Pentium 4 back in the day. I had to throw it in this machine about a year or 2 ago when the nice modular power supply decided to die.

Gotta love them 12v rails reading 11.50! Also had to turn the fan on the PSU to MAX because I could fry an egg on it. Probably not a good thing either (besides the burning smell I was getting....)

So in the meantime we throttle back to 2.8GHz with a lower CPU voltage and hang here.... :(

I had a 146, can't remember the stepping. It was paired with an Ultra D for one of the best combos I ever owned.

I should go back and push my 165 setup past the 2.6GHz I had at stock volts. Going through all the BIOS settings on the DFI boards was a total bitch.

Anybody remember the golden CCBBE steppings? Good times.

Nice, but the best skt 939 chip I had was I think my third or fourth opteron 165. Reached 3.2Ghz on air with 1.45 volts no sweat. My best friend still has it for his daughter's computer. 4x1GB OCZ platnium DDR memory and still no problems either at that speed. Since skt 939 chips had the integrated memory controller that was problematic with high FSB and a lot of memory, that chip was amazing. Every other one I had was average or sub par.

The Opteron days were good times. I ran probably about a dozen through the benches back then, trying to see how far I could squeeze them. Managed to get two 146s and a 148 past 3Ghz.

I thought CCB1E was better? They were sorta hard to find, though.

If my memory serves me correctly the last CCB1E batch to come out was 0550.

Most of the CCBBE's from 0610 to 0617 were winners. The earlier 06's (0602, 0605 to 0609 IIRC) were on/off. I had a 0615 up to 2.8GHz at stock volts before I quit due to temperature issues.

I had a 146 then picked up a 170. Sold single core opteron and still have the dual core opteron sitting in a Asus A8N32 Deluxe and 4GB of DDR500 ram in a box in the closet.
Retired that system in Oct 2009 for my current i7-920 build.

The 146 would do 2.8 and the 170 also did 2.8 however once I went up to 4GB of ram on the 170 max overclock dropped to 2.6!

Does it ring the bell on anyone? ;)

i had that chip lol with dfi lanparty board, overclocking was easy as hell, hit 3ghz w/ a freezer 64 pro without any problem. sold that system tho cuz the fan i had was putting out like 160cfm and sounded like a vacuum cleaner.
