So I bought B: AA over the weekend legit during a steam sale. I played it for 9 hours straight last night not even realizing where the time went. I was 69% through the game just after I got the toxin to kill Ivy's plants. Today, I loaded up my save, and it magically decides I'm starting from the beginning and it's overwriting my saved game with a fresh one :(.

I guess Games For Windows Live couldn't get me online (might be part of the problem), but my account was still signed in. I guess I'm starting a cannonball run so I can get to the part I was at in say... 7 hours perhaps?

I don't have much time to devote to games anymore, so it's really depressing when games do this crap. It's a great game, and I'm hoping to get through it tonight within' 12 hours, but I probably shouldn't. I really would be on borrowed time. I just don't want to chance it not saving my game again...

Do you guys have any idea where the save could have gone? Is there a chance it's saved but on an offline profile? Where would the steam copy have the file? I've already looked in my documents for the Eidos folder and there isn't one. Thanks!

Chalk it up to a lesson learned. Don't buy GFWL titles.

It pulled this crap on me with Fallout 3 and I had to manually go in and delete the new set of files it created in the offline mode so it would pick up my original saved game. Considering the amount of time I've put into Fallout 3, I was nearly sick to my stomach when I thought I had lost the saved game files. Keep looking around in the My Documents folder, the saved games should be there.

As an update, I actually did lose access to my Fallout 3 saved games when I upgraded from Windows Vista to Win 7 Ultimate (software and hardware changes can effect whether or not saved games can be transferred) via a clean install to my current Crucial SSD. Thankfully I had accomplished pretty much what I wanted to in the game by this point, but I still didn't get to play through some of the DLC packs. I figure I'll just use some console command cheat codes to get levels, money, and proper equipment to do this one of these days.

I do like the game... and there is no way I was getting it for the 360. I also have many other Games for Windows Live games and haven't had any problems. There was really no other way to play this game... and it's probably my favorite game to come other in the last few years.

Fallout 3 is a VERY glitchy game...

I avoid GFWL games just for this reason. I actually bought one that requires you to install GFWL to play on accident, and I just refuse to play it. I don't want to install that crap on my computer. It was a waste of 5 dollars, but oh well I have wasted more on worse things.

A similar thing happened with Plants Vs. Zombies lately, when they went from save files on the hard drive to Steam Cloud. The six people I know that play the game all lost their save data, including me.

On the other hand, Steam Cloud is a great feature and I really wish they included it with more games (I'm looking at you, Titan Quest). I just hope there's a way to manually back up your saves as well - I need to research this.

You do realize that Titan Quest's developer is long dead, right?

Bioshock 2
Batman AA
Red Faction Guerrilla
Dawn of War II
etc

Too many good games to poo-poo GFWL. Plus, I've never had an issue with it.

But I sympathize with your plight. I'm currently 20% done with Batman (played yesterday for about 4 hours) and would hate to have lost all my progress.

GFWL exemplifies everything thats wrong with cloud computing and modern DRM and companies too concerned with everything except how playable a damn game is.

That sucks.

I was at 20% when I upgraded to a SSD as my C: drive.
I backed up the B:AA save game directory, reinstalled Steam, hardlinked to B:AA in a different HD, put back the save game directory, loaded up B:AA, re-log in to GFWL, *bam* "Corrupted Save Game".
Turns out there is a second directory (for the GFWL account) that needed to be backed up too.
Oh well, I will go back to it someday.

Don't mess with my save files (whether that be Steam or GFW). They are MINE and if my own HDD crashes, then I will take the blame for their loss.

Cloud computing can suck my a$$.

I had an issue recently with Red Faction Guerrilla (also a GFWL title) resulting from me changing my XBox Live gamertag (via my X360 console). The saved games for Guerrilla are in a file tied to your GFWL gamertag and not in the RFGuerrilla file directories.

I just had to copy them over to my new GFWL gamertag profile and that was it, got them back.

I have Batman as well and I would be bummed if I lost my progress. I also agree that it's a great game and I personally have had no problems with GFWL except for the basic annoyances of having to login initially...etc.

I have multiple computers, I like steam cloud. Technically GFWL isn't "cloud computing" because it isn't computing in the cloud. They infact, don't even have a save game transfer service in any way like Steam Cloud. Steam Cloud storing your save game for you so it's easy to acquire when changing computers. You technically still have your saved games locally. They are synced with the steam server, not removed.

As for Batman, I was very satisfied playing it again, and I am starting another new game. The glitch didn't happen this time, but it is something they should fix.

Also, if anybody wants metro for cheap it's on sale today on steam for $13.60 :).
