Lots of misconceptions in the OP. I have a DG about 7 miles from me. Most 'real grocery' stores are at least 20, some 30.

Milk at DG last week was $3.90 and eggs were $1.50, essentially the same as the big stores. Frozen, breads, canned and dry good are very close in price but there is far less selection. A few items (not many) are considerably higher for some reason.

Problem is the driving distance and time involved. Even with slightly high prices, the overall value works out using DG.

Kicker in my case is that I get a $50/month food allowance from my Medicare provider. DG accepts this and only two major stores do that are both much further away.

No, I don't particularly like the people behind DG or the company as a whole, but money is money.
