So this is a hardware issue and not software corruption?

I was having other issues with my OS so I decided to do a complete fresh install yesterday of W7. Went off without a hitch. However, the next day, I'm getting some of the biggest symptoms that were pissing me off the first time, lol.

Out of nowhere, my cursor will freeze on the screen, or I will be scrolling an article or something and firefox will freeze, or the cursor will disappear all together or become a little dash instead of a pointer finger. So I'm guessing this is a hardware issue? What's the easiest way to check and what is the most obvious culprit? Memory?

Oh and a couple more things to add. I do have a G9 mouse, so I'm going to get the logitech drivers now (although I had them before). Incidentally it now is sometimes turning into a circle (like the Vista "processing" cursor....

Thanks.

Please post your full system specs.

I presume you have installed the motherboard chipset drivers? Make sure you have the correct driver installed for your LAN or wireless port as an incorrect driver can cause exactly this type of problem.

Try turning off hardware acceleration in Firefox. If this doesn't make a difference, do you see the same problems on the same webpages using IE?

It couldn't hurt to burn a memtest86+ ISO and run some tests on your memory. If that doesn't turn up any problems, it also wouldn't hurt to download a utility from your hard drive manufacturer's website and test your hard drive for faults. Are you seeing any errors in the Windows System or Application logs?

Finally, do you have any hardware monitoring software (like Speedfan or HWMonitor) installed? If not, it would probably be a good idea to install something to check for overheating of CPU, motherboard, or video card.

If you use Memtest86+ run it over night. I would check the drive with HDTune. If you can't read the SMART data with HDTune try Crystaldiskinfo.

Does this only occur in Firefox? If so, are you running a new profile or did you back up and restore a profile? Any add-ons?

When your mouse freezes, do other things, like your keyboard still work? Does it come back if you move the mouse to a different USB port?

Thanks guys.

All chipset and regular drivers installed fine. (Although, I will admit.. at the time of OP I had not installed the G9 drivers - but they were installed on the prior build 2 days ago if that makes sense). It does not appear to have come back since I installed the logitech drivers about an hour later, but I am not optimistic that it won't return. When it happens, keyboard doesn't work, everything freezes, then like 20 seconds it may (or sometimes not) unfreeze. It did the same in a different USB port.

No HW monitors installed at the moment. Crystal disk has me at 100% (Good) - 30 degrees.

Will check back in if this occurs again.

Yup. Should I try IE..? I'm almost certain it was doing it in IE last week..... But I could try it for process of elimination for people....

That might be a good idea. If you are like me, you have a FF browser at least open all the time. Would be good to rule that out. I would try a different browser for a little while and see if the problem returns.

Do you have another generic USB mouse that is known to be good? Do you have a PS/2 one laying around? It could be a particular port or the mouse itself, however unlikely it is that the problem is with those things.

Definitely try IE. If it exhibits the same problem, try turning off hardware acceleration and then browsing with both IE and FF to see if it could be a video driver issue.

When you reinstalled, did you totally wipe the partition first? Permissions issues can cause Windows to freeze if you reinstall to a hard drive which already contains a Windows install.

OK, the is much less concerning if it is just Firefox.

First thing I would do would be to manually disable all add-ons, and see if the problem returns.

If that doesn't work, I recommend you uninstall Firefox, then download and install the latest version, and let it create a new profile for you. You can bring back your bookmarks (not your profile), but I would recommend holding off on add-ons until you verify the issue is gone.

If the problem never occurred on IE, I don't know that I would suspect a hard drive, yet at least.

Did you even try my advice to test the hard drive? Post #3

What specifically are you looking for? I posted a few posts back after running Crystal disk: Crystal disk has me at 100% (Good) - 30 degrees.

And I haven't had it happen all day in IE but I'll be dipped if IE is running great. Seems to be an "occasional" freeze up (like 2 sec - but nowhere near FF) and I can't use the back button on some windows. Weird....

EDIT: Oh the irony.... Complete lock up 2 min. after making this post. Had to do a cold reboot.

So, just to be clear, we have ruled out FF?

If so, the next thing I would try is putting a partition on the hitachi, unplug the SSD, install Windows and see how Windows runs on just the hitachi.

+1

You definitely need to take this step to eliminate the SSD as the source of the problem.

I presume you've checked to see if there is a firmware update available for the SSD?

Ok. Updated the firmware. I hate to be so wishy washy in my descriptions, but I really can't tell if it's isolated to FF. I seem to be getting related symptoms in IE if that makes sense. (Freezing for like 3 seconds. But no cursor disappearing, and only one hard lock up). And I just did the firmware update this morning so too early to tell....BTW, did you guys want the actual smart read out or something?

Since both browsers now default to utilizing hardware video acceleration, I wonder if it could be a video driver or video card-related issue.

Does the system still freeze if you switch over to using the onboard Intel Sandy Bridge integrated graphics?
