So he gets out of the car and tries to take some nice pictures.
To make a long story short, its the last thing he ever does. Watch at your own discretion, its not pretty, though I spare you the link to the next part where things get much more graphic.

The reason I post this, other than that being amazing, is, does anyone know any more details about this incident? Why did he get out of the car, like what the hell was he thinking was going to happen...? What's with the kids in the car? Why did the guy filming just keep filming (other than try and help for example)?

i'm sure the man getting mauled to death by lions 20 feet away had something to do with it.

Seen that before. What I didn't get is why the people in the cars didn't just drive at the lions.

There were various things they could've done to help, but obviously the shock was too big for them to do anything.
I'm still having very difficult time understanding wtf this guy was doing out of the car in the first place.

If I could've taken it back I wouldn't watch it myself. You want to, go a head, you're doing it at your own risk.

Reminds me of a funny story:

I once went to this Tiger Reserve in Southern India (long story - friend's uncle is a Forest Officer and he let us stay at various anti-poaching camps along the Karnataka-Kerala border). We didn't see any tigers (were there for four days) but we did have a few leopards & other wildlife circle our camp every night.

Sitting on a tree stump in the middle of a night with nothing but a silly trench separating you from big cats is slightly unnerving. The really funny part is that our guides/guards were these skinny guys in their fifties. For protection, they shared a machete. (There was only ONE rifle for miles and it was proudly displayed in the Ranger's Office:D)

Yes - those old stoners with the machete that looked like it had been passed down four generations were going to keep us safe from leopards and tigers. :p

They told us to 'run' in case all hell broke loose and we were like, "Yeah, sure. We will keep that in mind."

I blame the death partly on the bystanders.

They could have done something - i mean there were like at least 5 of them - with like 3 cars.

Just run the damn thing over with the car. I don't care how shocked you are but fuck - if there is a lion chewing on your husbands face and you are sitting in a car 20 feet away, then you hit the gas and do something, rather than cover your face with your hand and act like you are in disbelief. Very stupid indeed...

Hmmm... It doesn't look fake... Can you find a source for that claim?

I dunno....I'm skeptical. It cuts from the mauling to the shocked observers and back alot. Kinda....movie-ish.

Indeed, if not mistaken it was an old Faces Of Death video and also if not mistaken, they "grabbed" it from this movie: Text

I would think that the continual cuts back to the family for reaction shots would be enough to sway the believers but I digress..

More about the FOD videos.

EXACTLY what I was thinking. Standard Faces of Death fake scene. For some reason, while a man is being eaten by lions, why is the guy still filming? Isn't that supposed to be a family member on the trip with him? But let's say it isn't a family member, just a stranger filming, why is he stopping to film the kid in the car crying? Just a cheesy fake FoD clip. Nothing to see here.

Wow that was anticlimatic.
Years of training from various internet videos have pretty much desensitized me from anything. From goatse to meatspin, from Pearl's head cut off to Russian soldier throat stab, from Nanjing Massacre to the resurgent blowing himself up with mortar, I've seen it all.

No, I can't source my claim. I just remember being discussed here on this forum. But, it appears fake to me. The editing is very unlikely for an amateur video. If you are shooting a member of your family being eaten alive by lions you'd never focus on the baby face inside the car...

Also I spent quite some time in Africa including going on a few safaris, and the way the lion attacks the guy from the back is very weird. The guy would have known the lion was there, because the lion would have let him know. Instead in the video the lion appears to come out of nowhere despite being very close to the poor photographer. Also it is strictly forbidden to get out of vehicles when driving inside natural reserves with wildlife. Finally, there are too many cars and people for lions to consider an attack. They don't like cars at all and tend to move away from large (and noisy) groups of cars and people. Cheetahs instead tend to like the cars and often climb on the roofs...

However, there have been many cases in which a lion attacked people who got out of their vehicles. Usually when some dumb guy thought it was cool to touch their cubs. One of the first things locals will tell you is to stay away from apparently abandoned cubs, as their parents are never too far away, and they will attack no matter what to defend their cubs.
