So this guy in Russia wins my Ebay cell phone auction...

He asks me what methods other than Paypal he can use. I tell him:

Western Union Quickpay
or
International Money order.

He'll probably go with the MO I suppose. The total is $113 with shipping. Now....if I wait for it to clear, there is no way in hell I can get ripped off right?
I had to make the auction international cuz no one in the US wants to buy my phone (taiwanese brand cell phone).

Sure you can wait until it clears, but why even go through the hassle. I mean, in the end, it won't really clear, right? Because the money won't be there?

I guess I don't understand how these money orders work.

iirc you buy a money order, you buy 113 dollars worth (in this case0 and pay the cost of MO itself, like an expenxive check

be weary, this reeks of scam to me

Yes it does. However, if I wait the prudent amount of time for the MO to clear, I don't see how I could get screwed. Unless the bank charges for bounced MO 🙁

what ever happened to the days when money orders were as good as cash

They're supposed to be cash, right? You pay up front for the MO...

i believe that Western Union MO's/checks or whatever they use can be forged. i have no clue about international MO's, but i believe both require some time to clear. if you must sell, stipulate that the MO/check must clear before you send the item.

The bank might clear it and then find 6 months later that it was a fake and hold you accountable for the costs.

Very true.

How can it be 6 months?? Doesn't the Russian bank transfer the funds over to the US after around 20 days? Why would they find out if the MO is fake after 6 months?

I googled "fake money orders" and got this.

While money orders are often treated as cash, banks consider money orders the same as checks and, as such, they can place the same holds as federal regulations allow on local or nonlocal checks. Regulations call for U.S. Postal Service money orders to be treated as cash under certain circumstances, but a Federal Reserve spokeswoman says they, too, can be treated the same as checks for hold purposes when necessary.

wait for it to clear before shipping goods, just as you would a check.
