Kittens that are 5-6weeks old can take regular cat food and don't need mom. However, I'd stick with canned kitten food of high quality like science diet because adult cat food lacks the fat that kittens require.

Where I live there are several no-kill shelters that will take in cats if they are adoptable (healthy and have a good personality) and you donate a reasonable fee for their basic medical bills. In the past year I've taken in two strays that at first seemed ferrel, but upon being treated nice and taken indoors rapidly became lap cats. Each were adopted out by the local shelter within a few days of me dropping them off, so there is some good news given all the strays that are put down each year.

Cats by instict are incredibly opportunistic animals that will do pretty much anything it takes to survive. I can understand a female carrying her litter onto a front porch or near humans because they have a better chance of survival, but a male doing this is news to me. The reality is that Mr Dad is simply trying to insure his genetic lineage, which is still interesting because whatever instict is at play here is strong enough to compel him to bring the kitten to you while he's scared himself.

That just shows how intelligent cats are. He dropped off the kitten because he knew you would take care of him.

We have a cat coming around our door now also. We have two of our own and this one wants us to adopt it I think. It will literally jump right up into my wife's arms. She thinks it is feral but I say no way. The cat is too clean, friendly and well kept. I think it just likes our extra food even though it seems to be around all the time.

We named her Twisty because she has a twisted spine. She runs a little sideways like a crab but is amazingly fast!:D I have a feeling I will come home from work one of these days to find it indoors.

My cat used to do that. He was a neighborhood whore for whoever would feed him. But he always came home to us. So yeah, just because you are feeding a cat, don't assume it's a stray!

nice cat...

maybe the male cat was living it to tell you if your hubby doesn't stop fapping the kitten could be next ;)

good story though. You going to keep it? I say that because if it doesn't have litter habits yet they may not be learned.

I've been teaching him litter habits. I put him in the box and showed him how to scratch the litter. This morning, I went to check on him, and he'd used the litterbox. He was covered in litter, and half the box was spilled onto the floor, but he's got the idea.

Anyone have any good sites for humane societies or no kill shelters in local areas?

That's quite remarkable. Male cats will often kill kittens so as to breed with the female and promote their genes. It is in their nature.
It sounds like you have a rare and wonderful wild cat there, Azraele.
