The guy has a p2 266 at home with 256mb ram and we're off loading p4 2.6ghz w/1gb ram.

And he tells me he doesn't notice a difference between a p2 266 and p4 2.6 (what he's using here at work).

Wouldn't you buy a work pc with 1 year warranty left for 250 ? in great clean condition

p4 2.6
1gb pc3200
40gb
dual video fx 5200
cdrw/dvd combo
sound/nic/misc ports
win xp pro license

He probably doesn't use his home PC for anything more than word processing or checking e-mail.

So, If I were him, If I don't need the power, then don't spend the money.

heck of a deal, since it's got warranty and winxp pro. that's more than half the cost right there.

Well, I see by your sig that you jumped on the deal !! My guess is his OS is not XP on that home PC, (just about 100% certain of that, in fact) and a Win98 PC with those specs will have about the same seat of the pants feel as a fairly loaded WinXP PC .. in fact, I have used Win95 PCs that would shut down and do other meaningless tasks as fast or faster than the XP machines. The fair comparison is apples to apples, so he isn't seeing a direct comparison. So I hope to not be perceived as trolling here, but XP has a lotta bloat, and a new rig should run the OS faster than what they currently do, but XP offers more features than his older PC can offer as well, so its up to him to determine if he uses a PC enough to justify the $250 expense.

Exactly. Load W98 SR2 and office 97 on the newer PC and compare, otherwise it's not a valid comparison.

ehh ... If I still had a 266 mhz and was content with it ... I wouldn't spend $250 on a new box either.

That being said, you could probably part out the box and get more then your money back for it, as long as it isn't an OEM box. (Though possible depending on what those 2.6ghz CPUs go for)

actually he runs work stuff on that thing.. he bought it in for me to install quickbooks 2005 on it.. and he wonder why it takes 20 min to load a 40meg quickbooks file vs 3-5 on the work machine.

Ill be selling them here.. i need to contact the mods first because i got about 100 of these to clear out..

This is where the reasoning fails. Money.

My friend says he doesn't need jack worth computing power, so he goes out to spend a good $300 on an Athlon MP system. What for? $300 can get you a Sempron with a good board and even a good stick of ram.

think economics. parts do not drop off as fast in price anymore at a certain point. you're better buying something modern but designed for budget.....
