Today was the opening day for the Canada Line train in Vancouver. It runs from the airport to downtown and cost $2.05bn to build. Opening day had the trains running for only 8 hours and it was free to ride all day. What happens when you give people free access to a new subway that has been in the news for the past several years here?

A really fucking long line, that's what.

("Me!" is not really me).

The red brick building there is one of the terminus stations for the line. The dot there where the poster put "Me!" is close to the stairwell that goes underground. The red line, well, that's the line of people. They waited there for HOURS to get on this train.

Well we do have 2 other lines here. I guess they just wanted an excuse to take the day off work.

You couldn't pay me to stand in a line like that. That train would have to time travel or something to get me to do that.

And Americans have never seen a doctor before: ;)

Free health care's different than a train ride. You could walk to your destination before that train got you there. All the walking in the world won't fix your case of the clap ;^)

Actually, I bet InflatableBuddha could have run from Waterfront to the airport before someone standing in that line could have gotten there via the train.

I drove by Cambie/Broadway last night around 7PM and there were still people lined up outside (though not as long as the line you had in your pic)

I'm surprised people waited that long just to get on a train...people must have nothing better to do on a work day. If I saw that line, I just would have turn around, went home and drove myself down to Richmond/Airport instead. :D

If they ever build the Evergreen Line, I'll line up like that to give it a try.

Wow. People in Vancouver must really have NOTHING to do.

That's beyond pathetic.

Weird. I was out of town, so I missed the hoopla, but there was nobody standing in line today when I walked past the train stations as I walked to work this morning.

Must have been a bunch of sily suburbanites.

Ahh, I see. How much do the regular buses and Skytrain rides cost?

Same price. Its a 2 or 3 Zone Fair, same as the Bus. However, they're planning on increasing it to $6 something after the Olympics, but that might just be direct from the Airport and not the rest of Richmond. Didn't really catch the details on that.

$6.00 straight to/from the airport is fine, cheaper than a cab. I'll probably still drive or take a cab though, I hate being on transit with any sort of bags, well I actually hate being on transit in general.

Dunno for sure, but I suspect the Airport train will be somewhat different than the Richmond Train. I'd think it had special provisions for Luggage and take more time at Stops for Loading/Unloading.
