“On day one, we were in Lucasfilm in San Francisco with Industrial Light and Magic and John[Knoll], our supervisor, he said that they’ve got a brand new 4K restoration print of ‘A New Hope’ — it had literally just been finished. He suggested we sit and watch it,” he said.

Of course, this begs so many questions: Is it the long-sought-after original theatrical version? Or is it George Lucas’ later Special Edition version with added special effects and scenes? Will Han shoot first? Moreover, when will it be seen?

Sadly, I'm sure it's the specialized junk and not the theatrical release (Thank you Baby Jesus for the Silver Screen Edition!)

I can't believe they re-released Force Awakens last month and they didn't bother with a 4k edition.

Wait a minute. Yes I can. Mother fuckers.

I don't know why people are surprised at any of this. At some point people have to realize they're basically being trolled because of their insane devotion for 70s/80s sci-fi fantasy movies. Hell I think you could argue that's been true starting with the original movies (and toys).

The Blu Ray versions were originally mastered in 4k. So yeah I am sure it exists.

There are 4K masters, but I'm pretty sure the Blu-ray versions are from the 2K transfers, just further cleaned up. They'll likely go from the 4K master for the 4K version (won't shock me if there's some up-resed release of the 2K one, and then a big uproar about that and then another one from the actual 4K transfer, just because they know people will buy both and the uproar will keep the whole nonsense alive).

The original theatrical releases have never been released on DVD.

Unless you got a bootleg or something, then you got the bastardized version on DVD.

The original DVD release of the remastered versions had the original versions as an extra.

yup, but those were only available temporarily with one specific release--and the DVDs with the original version of the films only had stereo or some crap audio on them. I think they were transferred from the LD?

I'll watch crap audio if it means I don't get Greedo shooting and Jabba in the first movie.

Better yet, get the 35mm Silver Screen edition of A New Hope and revel in the glory of the ORIGINAL Theatrical release

Thanks for the heads up.

Edit: From what I've read the Silver Edition is a purest form, while the Despecialized Edition removes the later additions and has better quality. Very confusing.

Yes -- Silver Screen edition is literally taken from an original 35mm print -- frame by frame. It's as close as you can get to how the movie was on release day in the theaters.

When did they rename "Star Wars" to "A New Hope" ? I dont understand.

The original movie was released as just "Star Wars" as there really was no hope that additional movies would be released -- even Lucas thought it was going to flop. The movie posters and the opening crawl only showed "Star Wars"

In the 1981 re-release they added "Episode IV: A New Hope" to the opening crawl since more movies (rumors of 9 total!!!) were en route and this was now, definitely #4 of a string of movies.
