The UN General Assembly has voted by a big majority to condemn its own Security Council for failing to end the unrest in Syria as fighting rages.

It passed a non-binding resolution, which also condemns the Syrian government's use of heavy weapons, by 133 votes to 12 with 31 abstentions.

The move came after the resignation of UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan and the failure of his six-point peace plan.
....

Can we please finally admit that the UN is a failure?

They are two different bodies in the same organization. If Congress votes to censure the President that doesn't mean the US government is a failure. The UN has a lot of problems, but one body censuring another is not one of them.

As for why people hate the UN so much, I have no idea. Sure it's useless a lot of the time, but it costs very little money in an international sense. There have been some times that it has served as an effective vehicle for conflict prevention and resolution and even if it fails 9 times out of 10 it still serves a decent purpose.

It's not the only thing but "with us or against us" regarding the Iraq war is one of the things.

Colin Powell was laughed out of the room when he gave his presentation about the "threat of Iraq's WMD's" and seriously, when the US is in immediate danger of a nukular attack on its soil it's inconsiderate of the UN not to believe in the evidence that doesn't exist.

The UN has been fairly useless for quite a while though, mostly because of the veto that nations use to block any real action.

The General Assembly is kinda right here. Violence continues, and Russia/China do their damndest to make sure that Syria doesn't even get a slap on the wrist (sanctions).

And no, the UN is not a failure. It is a place/organization for diplomats to meet and discuss common issues so that we don't have WW3 or repeat many of the mistakes of the past. We don't need any more world wars.

This is what happens when you put a Chinaman on an important council. Better to have Jap there than a Chinaman!
