I'll be honest, I don't know much about cars, but I'd say that before you decide either way, it's at least worth a bit of time to explore a new (new to you) car. You may get lucky and find a gem, but with a small budget, you can't expect to find it in a weekend.

I'm wondering the same thing on my 00 Neon, it's actually leaking fluid and the gears have slipped on me a few times before...

well, i dont know exactly. The car has been parked for a while, and I dont know its prior condition. As i said, I only had it for about a month, then the reverse stopped working and now the gears are slipping, so I parked it and am not using it.

What kinda of fluid did you use? If the fluid has never been changed, and you did it when you got the car, you may have just dislodged some dirt in the tranny. Do another drain and refill with dexron III, mayb even two or three with some miles inbetween (50 miles or so), chevron atf is a very good inexpensive atf, works great in the 91 toyota previa i service. If there is a transmission drain pan, drop the pan and replace the filter (buy it at napa, wix is about $15 for the filter kit) before doing the drain and refills. Better to try and fix it for about $50 and some of your own time then to call the tranmsision dead.

I did it at my uncle's shop, some kind of generic fluid (i believe it said dextron III). I cant really drive it because the reverse doesnt work at all. We replaced the filter and the gasket already.

it should - my accord tranny held together for 197k miles with the original clutch and only the clutch master cylinder changed. but this was a manual, don't know if yours is an auto?

may have gotten clogged again with the new fluid in there cleaning what was left behind by the old stuff. if it is clogged, you need to do another pan drop drain and refill.
