The transmission is gone on my 90 camry. It costs 1000 to replace it. Should I replace it or get another car for about $1500?

All depends on the condition of the car, mileage , work you've done
You may buy a 1500 car that needs a 1000 of work.
Can't you get a rebuilt cheaper?

wow...1000 doesnt sound too bad...my gf's 97 sable's transmission blew apart on the highway outside DC a few months ago and the dealer quoted her over 3000 to replace it...

Therein lies the problem...

question along the same lines, sorry if its a hijack....

when getting a transmission replaced in this kind of situation, is it feasable to also convert to manual 5-speed from 4 speed automatic?

The short answer is no.

Ive had the car for a month. new brakes and all fluids changed.

I hate to say it, but changing the transmission fluid in a tranny that has gone a long time without a change (possibly never) often kills it. That may have been what killed it.

And you say this why? Converting an older car is usually pretty easy. The basics are as follows, manual tranny, clutch pedal and linkage (probably hydraulic in this case), clutch, flywheel and appropriate axles.

well, i dont know exactly. The car has been parked for a while, and I dont know its prior condition. As i said, I only had it for about a month, then the reverse stopped working and now the gears are slipping, so I parked it and am not using it.

Mercenary...you know how to mind your business? 😉
I doubt the guy who asked if it was feasible for the 5 spd even knows how to begin.

He asked if it was feasible. The answer to that question is yes. Its certainly far more feasible then converting a stick to an auto.
