So, the spec V that everyone adores so much makes 141hp at the wheels?

Is this true? Can someone explain why there's such the preoccupation with this car? 141 isn't exactly spectacular.

this is kinda similar to integra 97 gs-r's 170 hp dropping to somewhere in the 140 range at the wheel.

:(

hehe...there are several motorcycles on the market currently that make more than 141rwhp. I'll second the notion of not understanding the fascination with underpowered cars.;)

notfred, thats on a new engine.. after 3000 miles when the engine is broken in the HP has been shown to increase anywhere from 5-15hp.

I've heard similar things. I still think it's a great car for the money, but I think Nissan could get more HP out of that 2.5 liter if they wanted. At least 190-200. Maybe in future models. Or tune the transmission so there isn't so much loss at the wheels. 40hp loss through a 6spd? It might as well be an automatic.

i think it has to do with the fact that its the exact same 6spd tranny as in the 250hp maxima. it wasnt built for the spec v. if nissan makes a tranny designed for the V then i'm sure it would be a lot more effiecient

edit.. and 180hp/180tq is really good for a 4cyl if you ask me. :)

My Suzuki TL1000R puts out about 126 at the rear wheel - and weights about one-fifth of what a car does....

Hahaha, I love stepping up to ricers at a stop light and see them try to race.... 65mph in first gear, 3 or 4 seconds, and I still have 5 gears to go. Bye bye ricer.

Heh, i'm sorry I started all this ruckus. :p

It's fun watching Rallispec defend his car with such defiance. Do I have to post the quote from the article again? ;)

Icould see maybe 3-5 horsepower after a break in period, but 15? I really find that hard to swallow.

<< thats also with stock tires.. i've seen people test with nicer tires and get better results >>

How'd you come up with that? I've never seen a car spin the tires on a dyno, let alone a 141hp car. How could tires help horsepower?

My friends SpecV dynoed 151hp/160tq to the wheels with intake & crappy exhaust. He also had different tires as well.

As Ralli said, the 6spd tranny doesn't entirely fit the car. More power could definately be wound out of it. The redline is an amazingly low 6100rpm. Older SR20DE powered SE-Rs had 7500/7000rpm redlines.

You should also note that the second cam does even open up until 5100rpm leaving just 1000rpm for the increased power. I'm willing to bet we'd see much better numbers if the car was given more breathing room.

there's hp at the crank and hp to the wheels; almost nobody will find out what their hp is at the crank cuz you gotta take out the engine for that

generally speaking cars will lose ~20% of the listed hp from the crank to the wheels; i have no idea what eats up that hp, so maybe some of the more knowledgeable people on the board will explain

I see a lot of "If...." or "After doing xxxxxx..." in this thread.

Thing is, stock, it puts out 141hp at the wheels. Bottom line. It doesn't matter if Nissan put a heavy tranny in it. The only thing that matters is that it IS IN THE CAR. No amount of blah blah blah is going to change that. You people are defending the car like it's a Honda Civic.

And yes Rallispec, your car would dust mine on the track no problem. :)

HERE IS THE DYNO.

i've seen stock dyno's that say a little higher.. but yeah, low 140's stock. No dispute there.

lets get back to the topic at hand here...

So, the spec V that everyone adores so much makes 141hp at the wheels?
Can someone explain why there's such the preoccupation with this car? 141 isn't exactly spectacular

find me a new car for $18,000 US that puts down 141hp, has ABS, moonroof, cd player, 6 disc in dash changer, 17" alloy wheels, really cool bucket seats, fog lights, and every other option the specV comes with.

that is why people like a car that only puts down 141hp at the wheels so much. :)

The new Hyundai Tiburon comes close...148hp at the wheels, 360 watt CD, 17" alloy wheels, leather seats, fog lights for 18k...18.5k to add ABS/Moonroof

And great looks...of course, the ugliest-looking part of the car is the Hyundai Emblem :p
