I had a package sent via USPS and I seem to be getting good detailed tracking like that found in UPS.

I get when the package was picked up, and in what city. I get when the package arrived in my city, and the status it was in my city, and get I went it went to my local Post Office. Before it was just a package was delivered.

I think they've always had this, it's just a different service than delivery confirmation. It might only be available for certain services as well (for example, you might not be able to get it with First Class or Parcel Post).

It's been kind of iffy for me. I normally only see tracking notices if a) it arrives at my local post office, or b) I'm sending something via Priority Mail and it ends up at the Dulles Airport post office for airmail upgrade.

Edit: If I'm sending something, I may also see arrival notices at the post offices for the destination address.

Express mail has real tracking, while delivery confirmation is not. I have noticed that delivery confirmation labels over the last year or so do seem to be getting scanned more often as the piece of mail works its way toward delivery. Delivery confirmation updates are still very hit and miss though.
