you know, it is a nice box, and undoubtedly they spent boatloads of cash for my fellow engineers to design spiffy packaging. kind of a social welfare program for engineers, keeps us off the streets.

but, on the inside - it's physically nearly identical to the LGA-775 design they came out with in late 2004, isn't it ?

Huh? It's not nearly identical IT IS identical. It slots into the same socket. It's not the package that matters, though, it's the silicon and that's vastly different.

Packaging has nothing to do with the core.

It could be packaged in AM2 for all it matters.
