Sucks that the cop got killed, but if you read the letter from the family it sounds like they had other options and instead chose to break the guys door down, and the guy killed a cop while trying to defend himself.

That isn't defense. Not when you're getting served for a felony, retard.

It's still defense, even if it's not a legal one. When armed people break down your dorr looknig for you, and you shoot at them, I'd argue that it's always defensive, regardless of whether or not it's legal.

Either way, that guy's probably in Canada by now.

Cops seem to have a really bad record when raiding places for weapons violations...

You pretty much said what I was going to say. Just because it wasn't legal defense doesn't mean that he didn't do it in self-defense. I doubt he woke up that morning thinking 'hey, I'm going to kill a cop today! I'll invite them over for coffee, donuts, and to serve a warrant and then when they come in I'll just jump out from behind a corner and *bang!*'

What other options? They originally tried to serve a warrant on Sunday. Woodring killed the Trooper on Monday when a SWAT team was sent in.

He knew he was shooting at law enforcement officers who had a felony warrant for his arrest. That's generally called capital murder.

And you never - ever - allow the family of a suspect to become involved in the way the family was offering to become involved. The family's offer was quite simply unacceptable.

You don't want the father, mother, brothers, sisters, and children of the suspect to be there while you're taking him into custody (so they can then start beating you over the head with skillets and screaming and crying). It makes for a highly volatile situation.
