... comes to you and says he will grant you one piece of knowledge. You can ask him anything - why is the sun yellow? What happened in 1912? Why was Hitler who he was? Who framed Roger Rabbit? etc.

Would you:

- Ask a question now
- Wait until the first sign of being stressed, then ask him.
- Wait until the absolute last minute, 15 years from now, when after months of debating, you can't hold it back anymore and must know the answer (perhaps there's a problem at work you've been trying to solve and haven't been able to, etc.)

Also, would your question be about your own personal life, or would it be something that would potentially help society (like what is the cure for AIDS, etc.)?

I'd give it some thought, that's for sure.

Or just screw with him and simply ask:

"Why?" and see what he says.

It wouldn't be immediate, but it wouldn't take long. First, the question of how much knowledge are we saying a piece is? After all he said he would give you any piece of knowledge, so my request would show me all the information that Engineers have ever learned and will ever learn. After all, that would only be a small piece of all the knowledge that is available.

Cure for cancer. Not only do I benefit humanity, I'm sure to become filthy fucking rich. Win/win.

Ask immediately, because those genie-types disappear pretty quickly. Just to be on the safe side.

Benefitting me IS benefitting society, because I'm part of society. Probably some stupid question like "how do I get my teenager to get out of his chair and get a job and help out around the house." Then again, the real answer to that would benefit society.

The piece of knowledge would certainly benefit me, but it might benefit society at large as well. I'd try and think of something really useful, like how to end US dependence on foreign oil, or how to make a pill that will significantly increase penis size. Hopefully I could get rich using those answers, and society would benefit. Otherwise, I would just wait till the lottery was up really high and ask what the winning numbers are.

Immediately ask for more money than I can ever spend in my life time.

Immediately ask him for the winning numbers to all future PowerBall and lottery games.

That directly benefits myself obviously, but I would donate a sizable amount of the winnings to charities.

The genie types are usually quite sarcastic, and will probally give a useless answer if possible. For example, the answer to "how to end world hunger" may be simply "give everyone food". Or how to "improve the US goverment" might be "elect better people". Also, other answers might be too complex to be used, like "how to cure cancer" might end up with a overly-complex, expensive, and currently technogically impossible answer that you do not understand. As thus, I would first hire a lawyer.
