Thinkpads, especially the T-series, are always worth it.

Check out IBM's ebay store for an idea on what that's worth. You may be able to get one cheaper from them.

Yeah, I have an R32 that I bought from their ebay store a while ago, and I love it. It's going in for repairs (it's all screwed up) right now, but the 3yr warranty is saving my ass.

I'm mainly considering that one because of the SXGA+, but there are other considerations as well.

I'm also considering this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3465158854&category=31554), but I need to learn more about the differences between the T40 and T41. I'm wondering why the battery life was listed as 4hrs in the first one I posted about, when I've heard closer to 6 is the norm.

That model 2379-DJU retails new on IBM's site for $1,939.00

http://www-132.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?categoryId=2049168&storeId=1&catalogId=-840&langId=-1

Can be had new from Newegg for $1859.00 with free tax/shipping.

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=34-146-025&depa=0

By the time that auction closes, that laptop will not be a good deal.

If you really like that model go for it at Newegg.

IBM is the best, IMHO. So if that model has the exact features you want, jump on it.

I want a three year warranty from a company whose build quality I can trust, so I'm going with IBM (this is a business purchase). Thanks though. :D

Picked up a T40 for a co-worker. Awesome machine. Only complaint is the lack of windows key. Grrrr....I use that key extensively on a laptop...but for some reason IBM doesn't put on on there.

IBM has a program that gives you a virtual windows key using the Fn key. Have you tried it?

Thanks Amused. I was going to go with Buy It now, so it would've been $1849, but I'll just wait until something better comes along. I don't need the Radeon 9000, since it's not really going to be used for gaming, but I would like the SXGA+.

Entity,

A tip on buying IBM laptops:

Find the exact model number with the exact features you want on IBM's site. Take that model number to google and do a search. You'll find some of the Ts are seriously discounted. Sometimes as much as $500.

Euclid Computers has GREAT prices on IBM lappies. They have a T41p that retails for $3000+ on IBM's site for $2488

Amused,

Do you know what the big difference between the T40 and T41 are? They both seem to be great units, so I'm trying to figure out which one we really need. Will mainly be used for programming and design at coffee shops, etc.

1849 +35 shipping is more than 1859 with free shipping at Newegg. :p

That is the lowest cost T with 1400x1050. IMHO you should jump on it.

If not, there is an R you might be interested in here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3465640359&category=31554&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT&rd=1

It has SXGA but no CD burner. But you can get an IBM CD burner for around $100

And this guy is an ATer with good Heat.

Nothing, really. What you need to do is list all units at IBM's site and pick one with exactly what you want. Ignore the T40 or T41 or p designation. (The ps all have 7200RPM HDs)

i bit the bullet and went with a T40 from ibm.com with a Friends and Family discount. It didn't come out to be much different than the prices already quoted. I'm very happy with it.

Now the real question: do I need SXGA? I haven't seen what 1400x1050 looks like on a small screen, but I've got great vision. Maybe I'll just live with the 1024x768, since I'm not sure SXGA+ is worth another $300.

Thanks for the help, guys. :D

I know I am in the minority her, but I will never buy another Thinkpad, and I do not recommend them to anyone.

We (my company) have well over a 50% failure rate on the 18 or so Thinkpads we bought. Not just a "bad batch" either, we bought them in small batches at different times from differnt vendors (some direct from IBM). The mainboards had to be replaced. I've got a dead one in the shop right now that needs it's 2nd mainboard replacement. Most of the time these laptops just stay chained to the users desk so there are not being hammered on. This ratio of "duds" and IBM's lack of interest in discussing the issue with us has changed our company's IT policy of purchasing new Thinkpads.

What series did you buy? My R32 is still going strong, and I beat on it ruthlessly.

Well duh. Of course your thinkpads are failing if you keep the poor things chained to a desk all day. That is like buying a car and just idling it for 6 hours a day. Or buying a cat and keeping it in a 1'X1'X1' box for it's entire life. You need to let your thinkpads enjoy life, and live free.
