So someone remind me, why is newegg so great?

Putting together a HTPC -newegg is consistently higher priced, nevermind their shenanigans shipping policy that adds $5 for a one ounce adapter. Yes, I've had good service when an item was defective, but seriously they're not even competitive lately.

The HTPC:

Thermalright XP-90
Coolerguys $37
Newegg $59 :Q

Asus P4P800-VM
zipzoomfly $93 free ship
Newegg $96 + ship

PowerColor R96L-SC3
zzf $79
Newegg - doesn't carry high performance LP cards

Silverstone SST-ST30NF
pcalchemy $114.95
Newegg $151.50 :Q

I could go on, and on. I love the newegg reviews and website but they're just gouging customers now, particularly on fans, heatsinks and power supplies.

Their prices are not as impressive as they once were. I generally just buy from wherever has the lowest prices (and isn't a scam operation 😛)

They've got good prices on SOME things (Fujitsu Lifebook laptops, particularly). They ship fast, and I think their prices are somewhat fair on most other stuff. Plus, they're honest and well-reputed.

If you don't like the prices, get the stuff from the first hit on Pricewatch. You'll be back to Newegg soon enough.

I agree. Their prices aren't even that great, but being the impatient computer user I am, I find satisfaction in knowing that my order will be shipped out without delay and arrive a day ahead of schedule. I always went with Newegg because of this simple reason. It does seem silly, but I did pay more to get it here quickly. After all, I am an American and I WANT IT NOW!!

Not bashing Newegg, but I agree with you, nosox. I've seen their prices inch higher and higher over the past year.

They never even bothered to carry the last mobo I bought; Asus NCCH-DL. Granted the market for that board is small...only overclockers buy it...but DUH aren't we enthusiasts a good chunk of their business?

And even if we aren't, we still give them the exposure and word-of-mouth that made them big.

ZZF/EWiz/Ajump for me the past year.

Newegg is extablished, and there isn't a gamble when purchasing.
Not always the best deal obviously.

you might pay a couple bucks more, but you get what you pay for. They usually ship the same day. I ordered a mobo and some ram on saturday and got it today. They also stand behind their products. They are giving me 100% credit back for ram that is over a month old and may or may not be bad.

Yes, I've had good service when an item was defective...

What percentage of stuff has been defective? How much have you purchased from them in the past? Obviously, YOU'RE the reason they climbed to the top of the heap in the first place!

Since they opened shop, I've made less than 5 orders with them, probably just three. Those purchases were made because they had the best price combined with shipping. In other words, they've rarely ever had the best deals. I don't know. Giving away free pens & T-shirts must be a better gimmick than I ever thought possible!

I really don't care much about saving even $25 on a $500 parts order, especially if going with the cheaper choice like ZZF means not knowing what parts are really in stock, and not knowing when the order will actually ship.

To me there is value in good product information, accurate real-time inventory status, fast shipment, and excellent customer service. Prices are secondary to all that, within limits.

I have almost always used Newegg and I have been a little spoiled by it. For my recent computer purchases I ordered parts from several places to get the best deals. I even paid extra for shipping at a couple of them. Newegg was the only one to get it out the door and in my hands as quick as I had wanted. I sat around waiting forever for some products to just get out the door and one reseller cancelled my order due to an accounting error and didn't bother to tell me (A8N-SLI...you might understand how pissed i was). I will be ordering most of my stuff from Newegg again from now on. When I ordered my case it was Newegg hands down. Decent price and great shipping for such a large item. I love fedex express saver.

Well said.

Pretty much summarizes my feelings on the issue.

Ordered a nice shiny new DVD+/-RW 16x|NEC ND-3520A last night simply because I randomly visited their site for the first time in a while, saw they had a burner for $59.99 with free shipping (Fedex Super Saver of course, which is way better than standard UPS ground or USPS), did some quick research on the drive ( ), called my wife to get the financial okay and which card to put it on, and bam!

I was done.
It went through steps 1-3 in about an hour, and in about 10 minutes I'll have my tracking number.

Poorly said, imho. There are equally reliable vendors that offer the same items for significantly less. The items listed in the OP are a good example.

I'm not after the lowest price and would never gamble on the pricewatch method. Newegg, however, is a premium that's simply not worth the "investment."

I've been thinking the same thing lately... I was about to order a bunch of nicer case fans from them, then I got to checkout and couldn't figure out how in the world shipping was something like $14 for ground shipping on FANS. Then I remembered I heard people complaining about their shipping lately... We had a few other things in the cart, but it was mostly fans, connectors, etc, and the shipping was through the roof! Needless to say, another onlines company got our business that time. It may have taken longer to get the order, but I wasn't in a hurry so it was no biggie that time.

Their speed of getting an item out the door and their service are second to none, and that keeps me going back for most things, but the shipping thing got to me this time. I'll still shop there most of the time, that's for sure!

because buying from 5 places for 1 system sucks.

newegg jacked up their prices after christmas, but their service and response times are tough to beat.

I got tires shipped here in two business days! Never waited over a week for anything I can remember, that didn't come via USPS. Buy.com got my last order here in four days, and it was shipped free! Guess they must be the best merchant ever, since that seems to be the top standard of measure anymore...

Not worth the investment? Well for a start, it just so happens that you pointed out a lot of objects that are priced higher elsewhere. However, there are many items that are probably lower too, not to mention the clearance section can be a steal sometimes. Not to mention it's not fair to judge all those objects against newegg and a couple other stores. Defeats the purpose of buying everything at one store. Anyways, I love newegg. They're local pretty much for me, ship fast, great with returns, nice, organized, and I have been impressed. They have taken the time to earn my faith, that's why I love newegg.

That's a big reason 🙂

Many kids at my school go to newegg.com because it's their alternative to paying retail

I had no methodology in choosing those objects, they happen to be the things I was after at the time. The other items in my list were similiarly priced as well, I could list them if you'd like. I'm sure they have some good prices on other things, but I notice the trend is simply a premium of untolerable size.

lol I hate leaving a thread arguing with someone and looking like a jackass because you've valid reasons for not choosing newegg. However, the truth is yes, newegg have been upping their prices, and yes there are better deals, but just because this time it didn't work out, you shouldn't leave them out for your next purchase🙂
