There are a handful of reports stating that overclocked machines that are stable in 32bit mode weren't stable in 64bit mode, indicating that 64bit mode may be harder on processors and/or certain parts of the processor weren't stable at the overclocked speed but aren't active in 32bit mode, but this has yet to be confirmed. Still, there are no major outstanding issues with the OS that should keep anyone even remotely curious away at this point. With XP64 finally out, there should hopefully be some more driver and 64bit app releases shortly.

well....can anyone list reasons to install XP64 (eg. on a second partition) ?
What woud be the advantages ? I know i sound like a dummy...but tell me...what gains/advantages would i get NOW ? (before we get the final version)

My specs are A64 3500+, dfi lanparty nf4, 1gb ram
X850XT, Audigy 2 value, Hitachi SATA 7k250, Logtech MX500 mouse

When is the final version to be expected ?

thanks

* how does it look with game compatibilty and applications ?

AFAIK Creative, ATI and NV all HAVE 64bit drivers so i would be fine there.

Edit2: Logitech MX500 ???? any 64bit drivers ? didnt see 'em on L's site...

You would get ABSOLUTELY NOTHING beneficial. X64 Edition is for businesses and corporations that need to run servers that need to manage huge amounts of data.

X64 is not for you. Stick with 32 bit.

XP64bit is final, and has been shipping for a few months now. For the most part, you probably will not see alot of benefit from moving from 32bit XP to 64bit XP, people do report it does seem a little snappier. Games do not yet truly benefit from the jump to 64bit..

If you can get a copy of XP64, give it a shot and see if the drivers for your hardware work properly with the OS. As far as the mouse, Microsoft probably has generic drivers packaged with the OS that should work reasonably well.

XP x64 is for people who use applications that deal with very large amounts of RAM. I "only" have 2GB, but I may be upgrading to 4GB before long, and either way, I like to live on the bleeding edge. ;)

Locating drivers for XP x64 is a different situation for everyone. For my system, everything is supported except for the Gretag Macbeth Eye-One Display 2; GMB told me that they are working on 64 bit drivers, so it's only a [hopefully short] matter of time. Note that until the color management system folks get on the 64 bit driver bandwagon, XP x64 is not terribly useful to Photoshop professionals (and amateurs, like myself). That ignores the fact that printer drivers are yet a bit scarce, and scanner drivers are almost non-existent (oh, and don't even think about camera drivers for remote or tethered capture!).

I just noticed your edit about the Logitech software. PlanetAMD64 has a thread about that, though in my experience, everything about my MX518 (back and forward buttons, sensitivity control) works fine by default in XP x64 except for the application switcher button that I never used anyway.

Do not go XP64, stay with XP32, i am posting this from XP64 btw. There is nothing to be gained unless you are using huge amounts of RAM. You will just get half assed xp64 drivers that the vendors threw together, i am still waiting on my TV Tuner card drivers:(

Same here. I reverted to XP32 while I wait for production/mature x64 drivers.
