Does your Touch have to be jailbroken? Are you running any unofficial apps that you can't obtain from the App store?
If not then there shouldn't be needs to worry about it - pay the $10 and get the new 2.1 software.

Well, if you don't want the App Store, Exchange Support, MobileMe sync, click to hold picture saving, Genius playlists, etc... then don't update. It's your money, so do with it what you want.

1.1.x is the highest that you can go. You cannot get to 2.0 without paying, or illegally downloading the firmware.

Personally, now that they've fixed most of what was wrong with the 2.0 software, id say its well worth the 9.99.

You can check out all the apps available on the app store through the itunes store (left side link). there's about 3k but id say only a tenth of those are viable for the common person and are of quality. they have a lot of overpriced games you can look at too heh.

Remote is one of the coolest (free) which allows you to remote control your itunes library on your home network via wifi.

As far as i know, you can now jailbreak 2.1. Hope this helps.

I do find it crazy funny, though, that they can offer 2.1 for free for iPodTouch owners, but 2.0 has to be paid. And what's EVEN funnier, is that they are offering a firmware update for the Genius playlists for last years iPodClassic for free, and that is DEFINITELY not a subscription model.

So I can understand why people don't want to pay for the 2.0 firmware.

If you currently have 2.0 on your ipod touch then 2.1 is free, if you currently have 1.1.4 then 1.1.5 is free. Going from 1.x.x to 2.1 is the charge.

I think the touch requires a bit more of a dev team then the ipod does since the ipod is fairly simple by comparison. Ipod functionality is only a small portion of the software changes from 1.1.x to 2.1 as well.

Not saying I agree with their horrid pricing scheme (figure they could make the money back in the app store) but just trying to explain why it is the way it is.
