Why? It's like buying a 747 instead of a cessna, then filling the inside with FOAM so it only seats 4 people

Most proper 'traditional' SUVs (like the Pajero, and every 4WD utility like the MAzda Bravo/Toyota Hilux/Ford Courier/Toyota Landcruiser 78) have a 2WD option (with hubs/auto hubs so you aren't dragging the front wheels as well in 2WD (although hubs in/2WD is much more stable & grippier on gravel than 2WD/hubs out) anywho.

And of course, 'real' modern 4WDs only go back to AWD (like the prado/landcruiser), which is a godsend in slippy conditions and on the gravel...

I thought the same thing but I live in Texas now, so no snow and we don't go off roading so there was no reason to spend another 2500 on 4WD.

you don't realize a lot of people buy SUV's for the same reason people here tell me not to buy a Miata - because SUVs are big, so therefore it's safer.
But studies have shown that there's actually no correlation between car size and safeness, but rather car price and safeness. It's true that smaller cars take more damage over a larger car if they were both to get into an accident before. But how the car is made tends to matter more.

Most budget SUVs are nothing but minivans wearing an SUV suit. FWD 4bangers with 160hp. Prime example is the Ford Escape. They have a fuel economy of an average road car too. So just because it's an SUV, it doesn't automatically mean it has poor gas mileage.
