OK here is the scope.

My campus offers classes on tape / dvd for an extra fee of $100. This fee DOES NOT include the DVD's needed for it and for 4-6 DVDs from the school costs, get this, $150!

So, as one would expect, some kids cannot afford the $150 for the DVD's and have asked me to make them a copy.

I told a friend of mine sure, just pay me $30 to do it (at cost for labor / DVD's) and I guess the word has gotten out and now I have an inbox full of people wanting them.

The predicament I am in is a moral / copyright one. I am not making ANY more money then I would for typical labor at work, I am doing it at cost to help those out who cannot afford the DVD's with the added on tuition.

Would ya'll do it or not?

do it for your friends for at cost price and thats it. when you try to help to many, and then in turn make a profit. (hey, $30 for 6 dvds? that should only cost like $8 or so.) So $30 times 20 people? thats $600 of illegal money.

it would be near impossible to prove unless they orchestrated some type of sting operation but that would be.......absurd.

Do any of these people who "can't afford it" own a car? A PC? Cell phone? If so, I guess they chose to spend their money elsewhere. That's not the same as "can't afford it".

Since you said the word is out, it's not going to be long before someone in authority finds out and whacks you with a big hammer. As soon as you got the first email from someone you didn't know personally, you should have stopped.

$30 is for labor as well. I have my own business and charge them at minimum wage for my labor and the DVD's at $1.10 a pop. So from my business stand point it is the cheapest possible way for me to do it, so it is at cost.

I don't think I'd do it... If something ever happened (school found out) then there would be problems.

Basically these classes are for people who work full time, or that are not offered Fall semester for a lecture class.

copy a dvd for them, they saved money
teach them to copy it for themselves, you won't be responsible.

Maybe I'm missing something, but if peope work full time, they'd be able to afford the $150. If a class isnt offered in the fall... and someone watches these dvds in the fall, they'll probably not be able to take a test or whatever on the material, correct? Or do they offer online tests?

<--- graduated a while ago, had to take classes by going to classes.

Umm not hard to prove...

Official: Where'd you get that from?
Stranger: That guy over there.

Schools dont require much more than one or two people to rat you out...

You are likely to get burned by the authorities, and you have only yourself to blame for engaging in illegal behavior. If I were you, I would "cease and desist" from any more copying.

Anyways, if you have to ask if something you're doing is wrong, chances are you already know the answer and are just trying to find a way to justify your actions.

It's wrong and you know it. Copying them is wrong, so, anything you charge on top of it is also wrong. The fact that your name is out and people know you do this is bad for you. If the school notices that the sales of the DVD's have dropped for this particular class they could start doing some research and you could get in trouble. You'd be wise to ignore the emails.
