how are they going to pay their lawyers due to their pedophile problems if you don't show up a few times a week and ante up some defense money??

However, what YOU did was ignorant and offensive.

Maybe correct on both accounts, but nothing to judge him by. He didn't know better, no reason to assault him about it. Religious rituals were offensive to Jesus, but that doesn't stop the Pope.

I'm kind of annoyed. The wife and I are Roman Catholic, and the reasoning was that we don't visit every week. I'll admit, we are pretty lax, we go on major religious holidays, probably about 6 times a year.

We fully intended on our daughter getting her baptism and eventually confirmation and attending fairly regularly while she is growing up. Yet we are actually being denied, and she is being punished because of our lack of attendance. I was baptized, confirmed and married at this parish too.

What I don't understand is that churches keep complaining about lack of parishioners, yet they push you away if you aren't dedicated to a weekly commitment.

wtf.

Sorry, I had to write this here to get it out, I'm still trying to cool down a bit before I email the priest back.

/rant

Well there's your problem. Stop doing that.

Wow, times have sure changed. My mom used to work as a nurse in a hospital. She used to baptize all the babies whether they needed it or not. Catholic parents or not, she'd baptize them all.

Note: In Catholicism anyone can baptize another person. If a priest is available then a priest should do the spritzing but in a case where no priest is available, others are allowed to administer the sacrament of baptism. You can baptize your daughter in the Catholic tradition and it would be considered valid by the Church. The priest is being an ass.

You are totally wrong! In fact you are 100% wrong!!
There is something the priest does that allows somebody to administer baptisms and NO it is not done all the time!!

This her first Baptism and confirmation --- sorry the priest is the only person who can administer this besides the Bishop.

If a McDonald's cashier tells you off, do you complain back at him? No, you go up the chain of command:

Cashier->Manager->Store Manager->Regional Manager .... -> CEO

Or in this case:
Priest -> Bishop -> Cardinal -> Pope.

I bet you won't even have to take it past the bishop. Hell, he might he spray the little girl himself, which would be way cooler than just getting it done by a priest. I mean if you're into that stuff.

my wife is catholic but since she doesn't attend regularly we had both of our daughters baptized in the methodist church next door. apparently they'll baptize anyone. the funny part is when both of our daughters started catholic school at the same church, we had to provide proof of baptism, from the methodist church next door.

and my wife wonders why i don't subscribe to organized religion.

If he was so incredibly ignorant not to know beforehand, it is impossible to believe he wasn't told by any number of people afterwards exactly what he did, and yet he still came in here and smugly whined that the priest had the temerity to call after him as he sashayed away clutching what Catholics to be the consecrated body of Christ as if it were a McDonald's burger.

That's pretty damn ignorant.

I'm sorry, I really mean no disrespect.. but how can some of you people believe this stuff? :p It's like you live on a completely different planet than I do.

If it helps you, that's great I guess.. But religion makes no sense to someone like me. I mean.. how would I even pick one, if I wanted to? Whichever one suited my ideals best? :D lol.. That's ridiculous. The way I look at it, there are as many religions as there are people on this planet. It doesn't matter what you believe in. It's up to you whether you want to be a good person, have a prosperous life. People of any and all religions are capable of being happy, positive, productive people.

Unfortunately, religion is and has often been used as an excuse for behavior that is shunned by any "good" society, religious or not. The hypocrisy is just overwhelming. I dunno. It's like trying to fit a square idea into a round hole. It just doesn't mesh with the repeatable, verifiable, indisputable, physical, tangible, observable facts. *shrug*

My (actually rather serious) question to you would be this: Of all the religions that have existed in the last 50,000 years.. How do you know you've picked the right one? :)

Again, ignorant possibly, but not something to get all huffy about. People do things everyday that are offensive to one religion or another. I did not get the impression he was being smug at all. You made a few assumptions in your response.

That is an excellent question. Some take it further even and ask whether any religion is the right one. That, of course, is what happens when you separate God and religion. As two separate entities, it's easy to look at religion and wonder what the point is. It is also impossible to pick a correct one, because without God none are correct. Religion is most often defined by tradition, ritual, and dogma.

My religion is to love God and love you. Do you think I picked the right one?

This is the reality of religion :(

At least your daughter will be fine :D. Just give her lots of love, education, and especially the value of life/responsibility/and possibilities ! as a whole. Last but not least, to become a very stellar individual who can definitely do good

That's just what God would do - make someone else suffer because their predecessors or ancestors did something wrong.

Or kill everyone you know just to show the devil how much you love god. What a great guy.

If you don’t participate in the faith, they don't want you. They already have enough half-assed Catholics.

I'd treat the church like any other service industry in this case... if this priest doesn't want to baptize my kid, I'd find another church that would.

This.

Your paying for a service, no different then you internet or gas bill.

If your service provider is not upholding their end of the bargain find another service provider

This thread is about how a man in a robe won't put a magic spell on your daughter. There are serious replies in this thread recommending that you shop around for a less discriminate man who will do the spell no-questions-asked. I'd check out Vegas and try to find a combination casino/wedding chapel/baptismal font.

Protest by picketing every Sunday moving forward. Make note that you daughter is being sent to Hell by the Priest.

Make the sign a picture of your daughter with the phrase Hellbound by order of <insert priest name>, and make sure you call the local television news.
