So on ebay... is it customary for the buyer to leave feedback BEFORE actually getting the item?

I'm curious, since I hardly ever use eBay, but I recently won a bid and it immediately reminds you that you're supposed to leave feedback. I find that odd...

<-- eBay newb.

I think it's just letting you know that you haven't left feedback yet. I always leave it after I receive the item.

imo, seller should leave feedback as soon as payment is received, buyer as soon as item is received and verified. but, ebay sucks, so who knows.

I think the buyer should leave feedback after they receive their item. Why would I as a seller, leave feedback first? What if the buyer comes up with some BS about the item so they can get a refund? buyer has motive to give neg, while a seller really doesn't...

No, leaving feedback basically nullifies your buyer protection. I would never leave feedback first as a buyer. I usually wait until I receive the item if not at least a week or so to make sure the item doesn't crap out on me.

Same here, especially because buyers can't leave negative feedback anymore.

Why do you say that? To me it makes sense for buyer to leave feedback first. It's an acknowledgment that they received the item and are happy with the sale. As a seller I'll usually wait until the buyer either leaves feedback or emails me saying that they received the item and everything works OK before leaving feedback.

But why would a seller need to know that? All the seller is rating is how the buyer was, which means did they pay for the item in a timely manner? If they paid instantly through paypal, then they're a good buyer and the seller should immediately leave feedback as that's all they're rating.

If something goes wrong (for example item arrives DOA, is lost in the mail, whatever), how the buyer handles the situation is something I like to keep in mind when leaving feedback.

Basically for me I guess the transaction doesn't end when the item is shipped. There's still a lot of stuff that can go wrong beyond this point.

Because the buyer might turn around and try to rip them off. Same with heat, I don't leave until the transaction is finished, ie both parties have no reason to further contact the other.

This is what those that don't know how to handle ebay would answer.

Payment is not the completion of the transaction. What sometimes happens is the buyer wants his feedback quick then holds the seller hostage to renegotiation post-receipt.

As a seller I will leave my feedback first prior to demanding theirs. As a buyer I'd expect the same courtesy.
