So, now that Opterons are s939, can you use ECC ram?

I'd built a few s940 opteron based servers, which all required Registered ECC ram. W/ the 939 opterons do they also use ECC? I thought s939 didn't support ECC, but how can the server chip end up on a non-ecc system?
