what should i have to protect myself? a router? firewall software? i have no idea what i do need to protect my machine. i don't want to spend a lot of money and it is only my home computer, but i do want something. any suggestions? or must haves?

If only the 1 computer get ZoneAlarm NOW like murphy55d suggests. If you plan to network several together to use the cable connection, look into a router, D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, they all work about the same and work well. I use the Linksys BEFSR41 and really like it. I also use ZoneAlarm on all 5 machines anyway, just in case. No I'm not THAT paranoid......
/OMG! what was that?? did you see what happened to the computer screen!?!? OMG must be an intrusion.... break out the anti-trojan programs, ant-virus, packet sniffers...../
or am I?!?!?
😉 😉

First of all Tiny Personal Firewall is much better than Zone Alarm.

Second you only need a firewall if you're a moron. Firewalls are an absolute waste of resources. If you don't leave file sharing on, turn off netbios and don't have any trojans on your computer no one can do a thing to you..

This simply isn't true. Have you heard about the latest Universal PnP flaw?

<< That's what windows update is for. Another reason why I don't use XP and especially not ME. >>

haha, unfortunatly i have ME and don't have the money to purchase a new OS. and i wouldn't use XP anyway, i used it and i don't like it. and yes, i realize that you have to be a moron for the most part, and in all my years on computers i have never had a problem, but i have never had an open connection (such as a cable modem) and want to protect myself just on the .00001% chance that i miss something. Thanks for the help everyone 😎

heh. Enjoy your cable! As long as you have the UPNP fix from microsoft you shoulden't have anything to worry about.

I have a home LAN with 6 PC's on it. So I've done the natural thing - bought a Linksys Cable Router/Hub combo. The cable plugs into the cable modem and the cable modem connects to the router, as do my other PC's. The router does NAT and some basic filetering and firewall things. I think it cost me $139 - so even with one PC it wouldn't be a tremendous waste. You can open up some ports to access IP functions. For example, I run an FTP server on one of my machines and can access it through the internet. The only problems I've heard of people with the Linksys router are those trying to run game servers.

And I wouldn't be so blase as the poster above. Getting hijacked in a distributed denial of service attack is a very real possibility, as is the exploitation of any OS bugs. This is especially true if you run IIS or an FTP daemon.

I use linux box as firewall, You can make them for cheap (mines a rather nice 500mhz box, But my little brothers IP MasQ box is an old p166 with 16mb ram and No hard drive (Coyote Linux). IP MASQ is rather easy to set up on modern distributions of linux for the mostpart. AND you would have all the other bonuses of a linux box
