So now my motherboard isn't getting power.

So, as of this morning, my computer wont turn on. The power supply seems ok, it makes that faint reasuring hum and the usual chirp when power is removed, but the mobo recieves no power. The power LED isn't on, and of course it doesn't start up. So, the question: I'll have to RMA either component to test which one is borked, as I don't have another power supply handy that has the wattage to turn my machine on. So do I try RMA'ing the PSU first, or assume it's the mobo? Also, if this helps, my vapochill control unit, which sits between the power switch and the mobo, basically a power relay, sits thier and says "Checking MB Status" durring power on. So, which component to RMA first?

Is it likely to boot with a $20 psu?

My comp is:
FX-55
7800 GT
4x 250GB HD
74GB Raptor
Sound card
TV tuner card
Raid card
Optical Drive

Why not just run it with the following:

mobo
FX-55
bare minimum ram
1 hard drive(not necessary)
7800gt if you don't have onboard

Alright. I'll try that.

anytime you have a power issue, check your PSU first. you can buy psu testers for 15$+, they are always handy if you work on computers. You can also just buy another PSU with the same wattage and determine the culprit that way.

Fvck... Nevermind. All is well. Thanks for the advice. I have no idea WHY, but my computer has decided to resume working fine. That's not to say that this issue won't show back up in a few days, but for now, it seems ok. I predict, though, that this will not stay fixxed, but one can hope.

Hi, Use any good PSU to test, but remove most of the power hungry devices plugged on to it. Strip it down to MB, CPU, one stick of Memory and video. If it comes on add components one at the time until it gives trouble again. You should have a good idea who the bad guy is.

Good luck, Jim
