So my Thinkpads hard drive died...replace it or go buy a new notebook?

I love this laptop, it has been with me for a long time and I beat on it quite a bit. My 40gb Seagate Momentus HD died last night. It is under warranty until 2007, but I won't be able to get it replaced in time for a long trip I am taking in a week.

So 2 options: Go to best buy and buy a 100gb notebook HD for $200 to replace it

Buy a new notebook...maybe a powerbook? I used the thing for e-mail, web, office stuff, classes, digital photos and music.

Laptop in question is a PIII 650 Thinkpad 600x with 512mb or ram.

Powerbooks are nice notebooks, no doubt about it but you'll be spending considerably more for one then you would to replace the hard drive on your existing laptop. Plus you have to keep in mind that you'll have to buy the software for your Powerbook all over again since what you currently have is PC software and not Mac software. May not be a big deal but worth pointing out.

I got most of my software for labout $10 each through my grad school program so it isn't a biggie.

I do love the old thinkpad...although it has been choking on some newer DIVX movies.
