This may be more 'Off Topic' as it's relatively older, but it is P&N related. However I'm sure the mods will find a new special home for it should it be in the wrong forum.

Background:

Prof is a lifelong democrat
County is 75% Republican.

I supported Kerry. The election is over, Bush won, it's too late to change that now. Needless to say, I still think it's a 'bad idea'. The movie has been debunked repeatedly, and I think there are better ways to present the facts.

The purpose of the thread is simply to help me consolidate arguements against it.

Wrong thing:
Movie
Right reason:
To present students with a different viewpoint.

The whole did the wrong thing for the right reason || right thing for the wrong reason type thing.

Anybody that even begins to start going "omg omg liberal agenda", just leave the thread now. The movie presentation was merely a suggestion, is still tentative, and is still open for debate.

The purpose of the thread is simply to help me consolidate arguements against it.

Arguements in which I allow both republicans to present, democrats to refute, etc.

Note:

I've not yet seen the film. IMO, the facts were bad enough. There was no need to add to it.

If your country is so Republican, i suggest the prof use less extreme/hyped material to get another perspective.

Having a discussion on the issues brought up in the movie would be far more productive than showing the movie itself.

Which is what my suggestion is\will be.

However, I'm sure most\some of the students haven't seen it at all (myself included).

1)Micheal Moore is a douchebag, but Fahrenheit 9/11 was much more fictional than Bowling for Columbine...

- Questions to ask your fellow republican classmates

- What has Bush done to clean up the enviorment (The military is the worst polluter)

- What has Bush to increase port security (NOTHING!!!)

- What has Saddam Hussian done in the past 10 years that would justify our full-scale invasion

- How does gay marriage hurt you and/or other people

- What has Bush done to reverse the Roe vs. Wade decision

The thread is not about Bush's qualifications as a president or his achievements (I'll resist the urge to jab).

It's about how the movie is an extremely poor way to present those ideas.

Some questions. What is the class? What is the institution? You say "Prof", so I assume it is at least a community college. I hope it's not more. Call me elitist if you wish, but using a movie, ANY movie to "teach" a college level class makes me want to weep.

So, again, what is the course and what is the institution and what is the formally defined topic your "prof" wishes to illuminate?

Thanks, I 'm not trying to thread crap, and, with more info, I will try to help.

US History. No, it's a local school.

It was more of a tangent discussion.

Regardless of the type of class or where it's from, reasons why this movie is a poor choice.

And after you've done that forget all of it because it's bs that's been debunked or put into perspective by others.

I think he should be able to show it. But allow fair debate about it. It does raise some serious questions.

As I suspected, the 59 deciepts is pretty weak:

Check out http://www.gazorninplat.com/archives/000040.html which is a response to the response.

"Moore creates the impression Gore was celebrating his Florida victory ...The ?Florida Victory? sign reflected Gore?s hopes, not any actual election results." Moore's own narration asks if it was a dream. This is the one part of the film that is explicitly a fantasy, not reality. Seems a bit churlish to count that as a "deceipt."

That is a pretty weak deceipt. Not surprised the right couldn't come up with anything better though.

F9/11 is at least as reliable as the propoganda America has come to accept as mainstream news.

it would be fair to show it if they also showed something like farenhype 9/11 and had an open, fair discussion.

I used to be managing editor for a college paper, and i wrote an editorial about earth day, talking about environmental terrorism, such as throwing paint on furs, pouring dye into city reflection pools and other damaging acts and I also spoke about retread tires and the ways they damage the environment. One of the biology proffesors took it on himself to foce every student to write a lettor to the editor condemning me and asking for my removal from the paper. At first we did not know why my article got such a large response, until we got a letter from one student telling us why he had written the article. They had to do it for a grade! Talk about abuse of position. As long as both sides are allowed, it's cool.

I don't see a problem with showing the film, sounds likea good time to catch a nap. Just make sure that it's treated fairly and both sides are shown.

Just curious, what's the class being taught?

If it's History/Current Affairs, you have a point, but if it's Film or a Media based class then the Prof is correct.

Amen brother...

911 is not a documentary...it is a future length campaign add against Bush.

Agreed. I find Moore to represent what a POS would do if it was animated and agree that if they show that ?movie? both sides should be represented.

Ask your professor to show Farenhype 9/11 also. this way he won't be accused of a hidden agenda. Your prof should be able to get this at your local library. I'm waiting for my turn to get this film. I'm number 24
