He went into the hospital yesterday around 4am because of a stroke. He can't move his left leg and only has partial control of his left arm. His speech is not slurred but its hard for him to think at the momment. They say that thats pretty normal and the docs are calling it a small stroke. Good news is he has feeling in both leg and arm and that he was able to put pressure against the nurses hand last night with the left foot.. a little.

Looking up from the gurny in the ER through his tears he said "I guess I quit smoking a little to late"

Good luck GF....keep it up.

I am so sorry to hear that Anybody. I hope your father makes a full recovery, and is back on his feet soon. At least he has the brains to stop now, my stepfather had a heart attack from smoking. That was ten years ago, and the fool still smokes between nitroglycerin pills. My real father died of a heart attack at age 55 when I was fourteen, and he never smoked a day in his life. He never got a second chance, so I am glad to see your father at least realizes how lucky he truly is.

BTW, thanks. :)

We'll his condition has worsened. He speech is now severly slurred and his motor control is out of whack. I was worried at first until I started talking to some stroke survivors/caregivers who explained this is normal. The brain continues to swell after the original trauma and causes most folks to become completly paralysed. Then..after a few days it starts to recede and then the controls start to come back again. I wish I had known about this on Monday so we could have warned him that it was going to get worse but will get better so he wouldn't be so scared right now.

So I'm really looking forward to Friday and Sat where I'm hoping to see some sort of recovery starting to happen with my Pop...

Thanks for the well wishes guys.

all the best to you and your father. i can relate my father had a fairly major stroke just this last april, and is still recovering from it. hang in there, i know that it can get tough at times, but let him know that your there for him and believe me over time it will get better. i'm sure that you heard that it can take up to 2-3 years to recover from a stroke. alls you can do is provide your support for him and the rest of your family. i wish your entire family the best and hope for a speedy and full recovery for your father.

I can also kind of relate, my grandpa had a stroke , however not caused from smoking. He can do almost anything anyone can do now except his walking is bad and usually needs a cane, he was in a couple of months of physical therapy at least. He'll need you when he's in that because it is VERY painful.

Hmmm...my uncle had a mini stroke, and cannot see out of one of his eyes anymore. Me smoked quite a bit, about 4-5 packs a day......then he slowed down, then quit. Then had a stroke. Damn. Hope your dad gets better, dude.

Well as predicted over the last two days he got worse.
They gave him a shot of Decadrone to help with the swelling because it wasn't going down. I went into visit him last night. He had no control over his face (eyelids, mouth) and he was snoring. I sat down next to him and started watching television because I thought he was asleep. He took my hand and started to squeeze it letting me know he was awake. I asked him to squeeze my hand after each sentence that he understood. He squeezed every time. I tested him once by saying something rather not nice and his reply was letting go of my hand and giving me the finger. :] Right then I knew we were in business. I started explaining to him everything I had found out about the type of stroke he had and about the brain swelling that was causing him to lose all his motor control. No one at the E/R or any of his doctors had explained this to him when he was fully aware or he just wasn't aware when they mentioned it to him. He seemed to relax just a bit after that. His left arm and left leg were moving alot. Apperently it was a blockage stroke more then a debris heading into the brain stroke which is good..2nd catscan did not reveal any damage just as the first did. He kept pointing at something off the bed so I got him a pen and piece of paper... held open his eye (which he quickly focused on both pen and paper) and he scribbled "Need drink". We werent able to give him the drink because we are unsure of his ability to swallow but we were able to wet his lips a bit (I wet his lips with some coffee :]) The nurse kept yelling into his ear whenever she was going to do something "Okay Honey..Im going to roll you on your side" that sort of thing. I said very quietly.. "Dad show the nice nurse that she doesnt have to yell for you to hear her... " He lifted up his right hand and patted her hand that was sitting on the bed next to him. The nurse was very surprised as his ability to respond considering the nurses log had him basically comatose for the day. He tried to speak but was unable to and he also forced his eyes open for a couple minutes while the nurse was there. She called the Doc and said it was "fantastic progress" and that they would be giving him another shot of the Decadrone at midnight. Called the nursing station this morning... His eyes are opening and focusing on things around him and hes trying to talk more... his limbs are responding more... I'm hoping we got through the worst part and now we are heading down the road of recovery.

Thanks for letting me babble..

CJ

P.S. Thanks for all the well wishes its appreciated one and all.
