So my mainboard died...

I was just sitting at my computer browsing the internet, deciding what game to play. All of a sudden it just completely shut off. I unplugged the system, waited a minute and then plugged it back in and hit the power button. It turned on for a second, the CD spun up along with both drives, and then shut off about 4 seconds later. It keeps doing this.

It may had been my PSU, but now I'm thinking it wasn't (or maybe it took the mainboard with it). I got a new PSU (an ultra X3 600watt) and plugged it in, and the same thing happened. So then I did the whole system testing works. I took out two sticks of ram, leaving two. I took out my 8800GTX, and put my 7600gs back in. I took ALL the ram out. I disconnected all drives and extra cards. I took out EVERYTHING EXCEPT FOR THE POWER LEADS (I mean, everything, no CPU, no RAM, no video, no sound, no drive SATA connections, etcetera). All these different configurations led to the same symptom. Power on for a couple seconds, then power off. The lights on the mainboard indicate all power is connected and working.

Do you guys think my mainboard died? I've been using it for about a year now, with my 4200+ x2. Only mild overclocking with the appropriate voltage bump. 2.2ghz to 2.42ghz with voltage from 1.35v to 1.41v.

I was just about to put in my new Tuniq Tower 120, too.

Cliffs:

- Computer shut down, wont start back up

- switched out PSUs, same thing

- Disconnected everything but the 24pin and 4pin power cables, same thing

- Motherboard probably died...? :brokenheart:

Edit: You know, I forgot to mention a small detail... About 1-2 weeks before this system failure, I had noticed that the HDD indicator/led on my case inverted. What I mean is it stayed on during no activity and "blinked off" when it was seeking. This further leads me to believe that a capacitor or something small was wearing out. What do you think?

Which board? Take the MB outside the case. Strip it bare. Remove battery and clear CMOS for 1/2 day. Connect PSU, CPU, GPU, one stick of RAM, mouse, and keyboard. If you cannot boot into BIOS, then the MB is probably dead.

Abit AN9 32x.

It's an SLI AM2 board with all the extras, solid core capacitors, etcetera.

So you mean remove the battery, and move the jumper for the CMOS clear, and leave it like that for 12 or so hours? I can do that.

I was planning on calling abit technical support on Tuesday afternoon, after work (I'm busy after work today). I think I'll do what you told me tonight, leave it like that overnight and while I'm at work tomorrow, and then go from there.

Thanks for the idea!

Yup...strip it bare as if you're going to return the board, and load it with the bare essential to POST (no HDD). If you cannot access BIOS, then RMA for warranty (Abit has 3 yr).

Be sure to disconnect the PSU when you "discharge" the BATTERY.

Eh, it jumps around, I've had a couple under no specific circumstances.

AC2005 POST codes:

8.2. = Enable ATX power supply
8.3. = ATX power supply ready
8.B. = AGP voltage ready

etc... It doesn't even get to the AWARD POST codes, only the power-on sequence.

My assumption is that the board isn't getting the power it needs due to a bad capacitor on the motherboard or something. I haven't a clue as to how I could've blown one, though. I baby this board.
