So my last day of Communications 105 was today

He kept referring to all people of African ethnicity as African-Americans. He called people who are living in Africa, "African Americans".

I never said anything, but I always thought in my head he was wrong. Well, was he wrong?

Discuss.

The questions is this...

Are people who were born and live in Africa supposed to be called "African Americans". This is what my professor called them. I think he is wrong.

i thought for sure you were banned after your last parody thread.

Edit: Fixed...sorry. Meant to talk about girl's who have self-esteem issues.

Edit2: Are parody threads lock/ban material even if they have a legit question and aren't just stupid? It's just another topic in my opinion. If so, sorry, didn't know that.

Only idiots test the Mods. I'm sure you meant well.

Unless you have dual citizenship, you're either an African or an American. Every African I've ever met thought it was absolutely ridiculous for American blacks to call themselves African.

I'm sure if I dug deep enough into my family history, I could call myself a Sumerian-American, but since I'm an adult who was born in America, I really don't see the need to use artificial labels to define my identity.

I kind of agree with that. I think all legal citizens of the United States should just be called Americans and we should toss all of the background crap.

Of course, I had no problems with my professor calling American-born black people "African Americans"...I just thought it was odd he called people who lived in africa that as well, as there is no part of them that is "American".

Well, thats what happens when you convince an entire country that sensitivity is more important than truth.

lol communications

Yeah it's a pretty lame class.

We had 8 weeks (the entire quarter) to write our speech. I didn't start until the night before it was due, and it took me only an hour or so. I got a 92 on it. LOL.

I was just thinking about something similar today...what the hell do they call black people in Europe?

African-Europeans?

We're just a little obsessed with not offending people, and in the process of doing this we tend to just offend more people.
