Background:

Basically a world-class sprinter in high school/college

Later got into distance running - topped out at half marathon distances. Never wanted to be competitive, just loved jogging. Jogged for probably close to 15 years. Mainly on the street.

Then my knees starting hurting, and my hips. Figured it was time to give it up. So switched to walking a few years back.

But now my knees kill me after walking. Particularly when walking up the stairs.

Questions:

1. Anyone have similar problems and any recommendations, generally?

2. My knees seem to hurt more after I go for a walk while I push the kid around in his stroller, as opposed to just going for a walk and not pushing anything. Is there any logical explanation for this? Could just be my mind fooling me.

3. Is there any machine I can use that I would basically go at walking speed, but is easier on my knees? I could ride a bike, but that is not really practical in my neighborhood, too small. Need something that moves walking speed.

4. Are there any super-duper shoes that are so padded or something that they can eliminate or greatly reduce this issues?

Thanks everyone, all non-troll ideas appreciated!

A guy I used to bowl with had knee surgery and swears by glucosamine chondroitin. He said it made a huge difference. He's a pretty down-to-earth sort guy, maybe early middle age. the sort of person who's recommendation would get me to try something.

I don't know about the stroller issue. Maybe you're leaning on the stroller handle and that's changing your posture? IDK.

From a quick google it seems that they make powered walkers, but I'm not sure how that's going to help you.

Fish oil, 6/day. Used to take cod liver oil too but it's nasty. Quad and hamstring stretches. Could have a muscle imbalance quads/hams/glutes. PT would fix that.

But wait, he's banged over 100 girls, he has banged member's mothers, he has tried to date the sister of his girlfriend. Oh yeah, he wants to ask everyone why Movie Theaters aren't open because he wants to take "his girl". LOL. Freaking seriously? Why can't people see this BS for the troll it is? I know AT numbers have gone down due to the popularity of social media, but why the heck are you letting some moron post all these BS post and not banning these morons. I can't figure out why anyone would respond or give him attention.

I call your bluff. "Basically a world-class sprinter in high school/college ". IF you are real, please provide your name and high school / college that you competed at. You don't have to post it public, post it to me and I will verify. But I already know you won't do that and will have many excuses. But I call BS and you will never make an effort to prove it.

You need to go and see an Orthopedist that can tell what is wrong and make recommendations to fix or at least live with it.

Asking people on a message board doesn't do you much good.

Maybe you have this:

Google knees over toes guy. You need to strengthen your muscles around your knee and in your legs. More than likely your leg is over developed in certain places and undeveloped in others.

If you have access to a qualified, competent etc. physical therapist ... see one, hopefully in person!

I told mine (I was seeing her for my shoulder) about pain in my right knee. The pain was occasional, but when I had it, the pain would stick around for a while and be chronic. I felt it especially on the stairs. It could be pretty bad sometimes. Her response was that I should stretch my quadriceps.

Now, that jogging... I got into that when I was an undergrad. I was friends with a guy on the cross country team and he would talk about techniques to avoid injury. The one that stuck in my mind (this is decades ago!) was to run on forgiving surfaces. I know, you're not jogging now, but I figured I should mention it. So, he had me running on grass. Absent grass, dirt is not too bad. Concrete is the worst. Now, I jogged the streets for years and years and most of the time wasn't on grass or dirt. But I did for a time run/jog to the local high school and run 5 miles around the track, which was dirt IIRC. Finally, I had to stop because of pain in left foot. I went into a sports medicine clinic one day and the DR said I had plantar faciitis... I took up swimming, and how!

I eventually had surgery on my left foot to remove Morton's neuroma, and as suspected by the guy who did it, there were two in the foot, and he removed both, at the same time (outpatient surgery). He had been a marathoner and at one time an Olympics qualifier for the US.

I can walk OK, don't run, but can for brief intervals, had surgery on my shoulder because swimming like a maniac for 10 years (2mi./day, 7 days/week) screwed up my left shoulder! It's kind of funny that the things I did to keep me healthy caused my biggest problems. But those problems are orthopedic, and "minor" in the sense that they aren't co-morbidities. If I get covid-19, I'm probably gonna beat it. But I'm not gonna chance it if I can help it.

I'm taking that daily with my other supplements, two tablets, get it at Costco. Don't know if it's helping my joints, but keep doing it. My cousin's an MD, he takes it too. He said he gets a high grade of it, didn't press him for details.

TBH, this is the first post from this guy that looks legit to me. I figure it probably is. I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Yeah, his other posts bugged me, the one about the movie theaters being closed, more than the one about the number of notches on the bed post! :D

Oh, one more thing, and I tell myself this whenever my knee hurts on the stairs (and I'm sure you know)... if you are carrying more weight in fat than you should... lose it!

I had this same problem due to walking and playing a lot of soccer to lose weight and stay in shape. At one point I was walking 6-8mi/day and playing soccer twice per week (on soccer nights I could easily break 10mi). It eventually caught up to me.

As someone mentioned before, I thought I needed to strengthen the muscles around my knees.

I searched "core exercises" and focused on the ones around hip and leg area (although I still did others, just less focus) and also iced my knees after any exercising (including long walking).

It took about 6 weeks straight of not missing a day doing the exercises, but it's a lot better now. I don't really get sore just walking anymore, but I still ice just in case. It's not as good as it used to be, but it's a LOT better. So I second the thought to try physical therapy.

I don't give a shit about helping the OP, exactly. Others might have similar issues.

Muffled.

I had that for a while. I'd walk somewhere miles away, then be in too much pain to walk back, and have to pay for public transport home. Became kind of expensive. Saw a physio and they gave me special standing/bending-on-one-leg exercises for strengthening the side-muscles that keep your knee stable (I can't remember what the correct technical term for those muscles is, but it was weakness in those that made the knee-joint unstable and hence painful).

That plus rest seemed to eventually fix it.

The puzzling thing was the knee pain began after I _stopped_ cycling (due to unrelated health problems).

I also had a separate bout of bad pain in my calf muscles, but that turned out to be due to walking long distances in the same flat Converse-type shoes I used to cycle in. Switching back to air-cushioned running shoes solved that. I don't care that they are overpriced and all about the marketing, I'm a big fan of sports type shoes. If you walk everywhere you need a bit of cushioning.
