So my grandfather was a WWII veteran

And I think it totally stinks that even though he received medals (such as the purple heart for a shrapnel injury) I cannot find a record of his deeds on the internet.

He died about 15 years ago, and I'm curious which battles he was in and how he fared through all of it.

The fact that I can't find the information makes me think about really deep doo-doo things such as why do I place importance on things in my life when nobody will even be able to find any information about me even if they want to (which they probably won't) after I die....

What branch of the service was he in?

Also, you could contact your local VFW for help, or even your Senator.

If the information isn't classified, I would think you should be able to find out.

Sounds like a website idea.

Search a #SSN and we will show you what battles and such this SSN was in..

I wouldn't personally want it to exist. Because then people affected by the deeds of the person could come find you!

The d-day thread inspired me to look up my grandfather's information. I found http://www.archives.gov/contact/index.html#phone where you can request their official information. I'm thinking about doing it and framing it. I encourage you to do the same.

when i researched my uncle online i actually found an account of the helicopter 'accident' in vietnam from someone who was there and it was more accurate and detailed then what my mom had been told by the air force.

The main reason there aren't alot of sites like that is that the federal records center in St. Louis burned down in 1973, consuming many states' WWII records (copies of DD-214s and attached "bonus records" the vet had to fill out to get his bonus check after the war). Anyway, I have contacts with the American Legion, ABMC, VFW, and other WWII vets' groups, so if you want, PM me as much of the following as possible and I'll see if I can get you some info.

-Name
-Branch (Army, Navy, Marines, or Air Corps)
-Rank
-Hometown, County, State
-Dates of entry and discharge
-Theaters (European, American, Europe-Africa-Middle East, or Asiatic-Pacific)
-Awards/Decorations
-Unit
