my grandma is in one.

The first one she was in was really really nice but the staff there were horrible to her and I hated her being there. Also, the A/C was on really really high and it was so cold that almost her whole floor caught the flu and two people died of pneumonia IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SUMMER.

The one she is in now is not nearly as nice but the staff are so loving and caring and you can tell they like being around elderly people.

Its important to ask questions like "how often do they get bathed?" and "how often do you change the bedding?". We learned when looking for the new home for my grandma that some places didn't even follow government standards when it comes to stuff like that.

Some are nice, some are freaking terrible. You have to do your research and visit often and ask gramps how things are going. Don't hesitate to move him if you aren't satisfied with the care.

great advice.

visit your grandpa often. even though i dislike going to old folk's homes a visit is very appreciated. my grandmother was in a good one, and she liked it there - no complaints-.

don't have any relatives in one but I used to work in the kitchen of one.
i didn't really think of it at the time, but those places are so sad. the people just sit around in their wheelchairs most of the time.

they did have things going on occasionally, like games and crafts and sometimes they would have someone from outside, like a band, come in and play, but that was maybe only a few hours out of a day. they would line up outside the dining room area like an hour or 2 before meal times.

I just felt real bad for some of those people.

golden years? I've seen the same thing time-after-time. When I'm too old to take care of myself just take me out back, with my deer rifle, and do me in.

my plan is to get a cabin in the mountains, montana or idaho, and go up there by myself
then one day when a blizzard is forecast, walk as far up the mountain as i can and find a nice view and sit down and wait to be covered in snow and freeze to death. like what they say the old indians used to do when they knew it was their time to go

Everytime I think of old retirement homes I think of "Happy Gilmore" with Ben Stiller as the orderly...

Sounds like a plan to me. I think the eskimos use to do something like that. Today with global warming you will probably just tan yourself to death.

I just helped out moving over my fiancee's Grandma into an assisted living home about two weeks ago now.

She has 3 heard attacks in a week period and after that she's just to weak to take care of herself.

We both think the place she's in is pretty nice though and so far she seems pretty happy there.

They really aren't that bad. Just be sure to visit him often so he doesn't feel abandoned.

I plan on either
1) driving a car off a cliff
2) shotgun in the mouth
3) taking a bath with the toaster.

I don't want to be a burden on anyone and if all I have to look forward to is sitting around and watching TV, then it's definatly my time to go.
