The Theft Department of Columbia Gas disconnected my line and took the meter. Apparently the line was originally disconnected in august and someone fucked with the meter and been stealing gas ever since.

Get one of these and some cans of diesel. ;)

Seriously - get on the phone with your utility and let them know the dwelling is occupied and you have children and an elderly person in the house. They will bring a meter holding it in between their legs begging you not to call the news. ;)

Ordinarily yes, but since it's due theft I or better my landlord ( or the guy that owns the townhouse? ) needs to deal with em. I don't even know where the fucking meter is... or was.

Just so you know, duplex electrical outlets in kitchens are required to be fed by 2 breakers instead of 1. You can run 2 space heats from the same duplex without tripping a breaker :)

1. Move into hotel room
2. Call landlord, tell him he's paying for it, since he messed up with the utility transfer

Seriously, someone had to be getting a bill all this time, unless it had been disconnected, and your landlord illegally reconnected the meter. Either way, it's his responsibility.

Call the gas emergency line, they'll likely send somebody to hook it up. Or bundle up, preferably in a tent in your landlords lawn.

Electric space heating looks brutal but at least women will still come over and sleep with you. If you're living in a tent, nobody is going to sleep with you.

Your pipes will freeze. Turn off the main because if they burst and then thaw out most everything in there will be trashed.

Not quite, but the kitchen is required to be fed by two dedicated circuits. So, connecting two heaters in the kitchen is possible.

OK, living in a house without central heating I can chime in here. One week a long long time ago it was 28 outside. I survived. Things you can do:

Space heater, best are the parabolic ones

Wear lots of clothes (multi layer)

Warm beverages

Fireplace if you got one

Put a 250 watt heat lamp (or two) instead of room light or in addition

Run around the block, or do jumping jacks or whatever

But if they do in that weather, they'll have their arms around you! :awe:

This.

When we first moved into our new house, we accidentally signed up with the wrong water district. (We are right on the border of two districts). One night, we came home and had no water. Our "real" water district had shut off and locked our water supply line. Once we figured out what the problem was, we called our water district's emergency phone and told them we have a baby and no water. They sent a guy from his house on a Friday night (around 10:30 PM) to turn our water back on.

As for the immediate concern, go to Home Depot and buy yourself those bigger free-standing space heaters. Those rock. They'll eat up your electric bill though.

ALL space heaters regardless of size - if they plug into a normal household outlet - are limited to 1.5kW or 3413 BTU/hr. Some feel hotter than others (radiant vs. convection). Amount of thermal output, however is the same.

They won't, since it's disconnected/stolen since august.

I don't condone stealing utilities at all. But with temps like that if he says he has no heat, they WILL send somebody out.

After that he and the landlord can duke it out because the bill will go to the property owner.

Kitchens

All the kitchen, breakfast room, pantry, and dining room outlets must be supplied by at least two 20-amp small appliance circuits.

Outlets above the kitchen counter normally are fed by both circuits -- they all cannot be wired to just one circuit. The circuits should not supply any lights or other outlets in the house.

In Canada's version of the NEC, the specific rule is 26-722b:
except as may be permitted by items (c) and (d), at least two branch circuits shall be provided for receptacles (15 A split or 20 A T-slot) installed for kitchen counters of dwelling units in accordance with rule 26-712(d)iii), (iv), and (v); and
(i) no more than two receptacles shall be connected to a branch circuit; and
(ii) no other outlets shall be connected to these circuits;

What that means is the top and bottom plugs are on different branch circuits and each branch has 2 receptacles. One duplex will be split on circuits 5 and 7 using a 2-pole breaker and the duplex next to it it will also be on 5 and 7. The top and bottom plugs each have their own breaker, but tripping either of them will trip both of them.

Do you have to pay for electricity or is that part of rent?
If not, get as a ton of electric heaters and put them on full pin. You want to try to maximize every single circuit without tripping the breaker. You have 1800w per circuit to play with, so get like 1500w heaters. In fact, this could be fun. Probably the FASTEST heat you'll ever get when you flip all those on at once LOL.

The oven plug should be able to give 9600w, have fun with that one too. :D Of course, try not to burn the place down.

When the landlord sees the electric bill he will get the gas fixed up asap. :D

Heat is a necessity according to the Federal government. They're breaking the law.
